Redwing blackbirds are back today. Still collecting sap but I think this weekend might be it. Cut a bunch of hop hornbeam and musclewood on Saturday to use for growing shiitake mushrooms. Always...
It's been slow but finally had a good run yesterday. Boiling tonight.
We tapped on Sunday also. This is a week earlier than normal but the 10 day forecast looks good. Collected 50 gallons yesterday off of 54 taps. Will tap some more tomorrow.
Have a great season...
Call and tell them. Don't suffer in silence.
It would be insane to run without sight glasses.
I wanted to bring this thread back up to the top. We have been using this modification for 2 years now. It really makes a huge difference in keeping a consistent level in the pans.
I did this on my Sunrise 2X4 arch and it made a huge difference. It went from 10 to 15gph with a divided flat pan. I purchased the blower from Smoky Lake. No cons that I can see. You will just...
Sounds good. I'm going to stick with the brush and quick power wash!
When you clean the bottom of your flue pans at the end of the year do you get every bit of the black off or just brush and then power wash the majority? I've done it both ways and am curious what...
I just filtered another batch last night with my 9" CDL and 1 cup DE per gallon. Using 3 prefilters and 1 felt I have been doing 2-1/2 gallon batches without changing the prefilter. When the filter...
We're south of Fort Wayne. Boiled 200 gallons in 8 hours today. Ended up with 5.5 gallons of syrup.
Should be a another big week.
Collected 122 gallons off of 70 taps yesterday. Getting cold again. The next run in a week or so should be big.
Tapped last week. First boil yesterday. Next couple days looks like we'll get a good run. We only have 70 taps out now but will put a few more in this week.
That is the amount we are using with ours. The pre-filter clogs up really quick without DE.
We just fill up the tank with hot water and let it sit a while then drain it right before filtering the syrup. It helps keep the syrup up to temperature while bottling. We bottle right from the...
We used one the last 2 years for filtering and bottling with a small inexpensive shop vac. We are able to get 2 gallons before plugging the pre-filter, but with filter aid are getting over twice...
Looks like fun. Thanks for posting.
It was a fast and furious season. With the cold weather we lost the month of February but had a busy few weeks and boiled for the last time Tuesday night. Froze what was left in the pan that we...
We are boiling for the first time today with this modification and WOW what a difference! I didn't notice a problem last year using natural draft but now that I added forced draft to my arch the...
I added flat stock to the inside of the door frame and bolted an additional layer of insulation to the door. When you close the door the added layer seals tight against the flat stock. Last year...

Boiled 80 gallons in 3.5 hours last night from lighting the fire to shut down. I added a blower and made the door air tight. It's doubling our boiling rate.
How deep is your sap level in the pan that you are having that much trouble with sap splashing?
I have that same pan and use this brush from Bascom.

Finally time up here. I have 75 taps out so far. The 30 sugars in the woods produced 35 gallons yesterday. The silvers in the yards are just starting to run.
Great question. The Leader has 11- 5 inch flues with internal float valves and the SL 8- 5 inch flues with external floats.
I got a solid 15gph with my SL last year using natural draft and...
