Spud- did you see your neighbor (abutting property) put up his sugaring operation up for sale 260+ acres and 20k taps for 4.2 million?? That’s a wild number even for that sized operation. Granted it does include a house but still.

I wish him well. If he gets his price then I should sell mine for 2 million.

ran real hard here yesterday. best of the season so far. still testing 2%. the sap was a bit cloudy this weekend but it was clear yesterday. woke up to 29 degrees on the thermometer at 5 this a.m. should be another really good day for the sap to run! 2 more warm days here then it appears as we'll be back to normal temperatures.
Sap ran all night and testing 1.5%. I got about 1500 gallons since midnight and should get another 2500 today.

thought it ran as hard as it could yesterday... i was wrong. its running even faster today. my 500 taps are running so hard that it's not allowing the internal pump on my electric releaser to kick off. hopefully the internal pump constantly running isn't an issue cuz i'd hate to miss out on this type of run. never seen it run like this! haven't checked the sugar content but hopefully it's still at 2% as it was yesterday!
I have 3000 gallons so far today. Sap still running 225gph at 8:30pm. I hope to get another 4000 gallons before freeze up tomorrow night.

Averaging 1.75 gallons a day at the moment. Got the vacuum up to 27 yesterday morning, yesterday afternoon wind kicked up and knocked it back to 22.
Sap ran a bit last night. This morning at 5 the rain was coming down hard. Now we just got two inches of snow and sap stopped. Supposed to hit 40 and sun by 3pm. We could have a 4-5 hour gusher before it freezes again.

It should open up pretty good here for us today. Looks like another little run last night before the freeze up. At 10pm it had stopped and I was at 29*. Still at only 31* here at 8am. So pretty good long freeze to reset the trees for a good run today. Sap went a bit cloudy yesterday as I’m sure the warm spell didn’t help the mainlines. But the ice today should scrub them down and clear things up. Sugar dropped way off as well. I feel like the trees are just dumping water now so lots of volume and lighter on the sugar content. But im pretty excited for the nexts weeks weather, 20s and upper 40s with some form of perception snow rain?
April is just around the corner
PM
Yesterday at about 10am the gusher began. Sap ran 450gph all day until about 7pm. Sap is testing 1.2% and cleared up. Forecast is not showing much for sap in the next 5 days or so. I’m hoping for three strong weeks in April.

been a good weekend up this way. got home from work friday and my main tank was over flowing. first time that has ever happened to me. got .75 gpt saturday and sunday. Went down to check the tanks this a.m and they are full to the top. only got to 36 degrees yesterday. had to pump sap up into my feed tank in hopes that'll keep things from over flowing till 10 today. gonna be a long day in the sugar house today! sap was down to 1.8 this weekend. today its back to 2%. syrup quality has really improved over the last 3-4 days. made dark robust and even darker all season up until this past weekend. making amber rich currently. going to be warm today, but looking like anotehr good week of sugaring weather.
Good that you guys to the north escaped the weekend ice storm. I'm thinking a lot of lines laying on the ground today. Ice was terrible in this part of the state. Stood outside yesterday and it was nonstop sound of limbs and trees snapping everywhere.
My #2 woods runs on generator. I went to fill the fuel tank at 5 am and the generator was not running. Yesterday I fiddled with it for a few hours in the rain but could not get it to run. I brought it to a guy in Hyde Gate and he is looking at it today. He said based on what he sees, it’s not looking good. I ran over to Tractor Supply and bought their last one in stock. Eight hours later I got the new one running. I did get 2000 gallons overnight and it’s running pretty good this morning. Sap is clear and testing 1.5% now. I did have sap running gravity all day yesterday so it was not a complete loss.

Well we received 2 days of freezing rain and ice. Everything was frozen hard. Then the damage started yesterday. Trees and limbs coming down all over. Power outage for two days not good. I just got to be able to walk in the woods this afternoon as all the ice was off. Lots of work to get this up and going again. Chainsaw ran for hours this afternoon and will be again tomorrow. I sure am glad we didn’t have any wind. As the mountain side would be devastated.
I’m going to plug away tomorrow in hopes of ending the season on a high note. I would like to think we have another week and a half left.

I remember the '98 ice storm. I was living part way across the state when it hit. We were just starting with pipeline and my Dad and Uncle were running most of the operation with my Aunt. I was busy with where I was working/living and wihtout power for over 1 week...got a generator after that one. This weekend was a little snow, maybe 2" and mostly rain/ice. Not much for trees down in our community this weekend.
Here now we fought some leaks or ice issues over the weekend. It was hard to get over 10" of vacuum between two collection points running one vacuum pump (normal operation and used to be able to maintain 25-26.5"). If we shut down station 1 (350 taps) then station 2 (400 taps) would get to 26". I stripped and cleaned the mechanical releaser at station 1 which is about 10 years old and the vacuum increased 1". I wanted to walk the woods today but got tied up with work. Plus when things warmed up tha vacuum increased to 21". I will have to try to get out of work early tomorrow to walk a line or three (I have some in mind to check first). Seems to be flowing into the tanks decently this afternoon.
Mike
Sorry to hear about all the damage you suffered. I hope you can get things cleaned up soon. These ice storms and breakdowns can be so stressful. Let’s hope all of us can still have a great season.

we got 2.3 gpt sunday night into this morning. sap was testing 1.9% still. making syrup on the border of fancy and amber rich. nice tasty stuff. after 11 hours of boiling and still having 500 gallons to get through this evening, i think it's time for a small R.O. added another line of big mature trees this year and it seems as those trees are gushers and have put me over the edge of being able to keep up with heavy flows. hoping for another 2 weeks here as the forecast is looking good.

11 hours - yup. I'd say you're ready for an RO. Do you burn wood, heating oil, or something else? Whatever your fuel, you'll save a lot with an RO in addition to your time. I'm guessing that a mini RO would burn only around $2 to $3 of electricity to process your 500 gallons. I figure that I use a little less than $20 in electricity to process 4000 gallons to about 14% and to clean the RO. The capital costs are a little high but you'll get a quick ROI with the savings in fuel and boiling time labor.

i burn wood. i have a mostly unlimited supply between my property at the house and my camp. between my hunting camp and my house properties i have an unlimited supply of wood, but having a 50 hour a week job, i'm looking for the time savings. i'm thinking a little 250-300 gph R.O would come in awfully handy! especially this year. seems like it didn't run much early on but when it started running it's running very hard! we got another 1 gpt run yesterday in about a 6-7 hour window. sat tested 1.9% still. still making a light amber rich. i was almost able to get caught back up last night. should be a good stretch of weather for the next 4-5 days. hopefully we'll make up for what we lost starting 3 weeks late up this way!

On the season total of 18675 gallons of sap 255.5 gallons syrup. That’s a 5% increase over my record year in sap and almost 10% increase in syrup to my highest year. A lot of producers have said this is a down year so I’m attributing the increase in production to the Middle Valley Maple barbed stubby antimicrobrial adapters.
Sounds like you had a great season. When did you finish tapping this year? I’m wondering with your trees going dry, mine should be close to doing the same thing. I’m at 1200 elevation and I completed tapping on March 8th. This is the latest I have ever tapped. I was also told that higher elevations were not doing as well as lower. What is your elevation? We are likely goin to call it tomorrow. We have almost 900 gallons of sap on 750 taps since Friday afternoon. It's running pretty slow. We are 4 gallons shy of last years total at 270 gallons. Our last boil on Frinday yielded good odor and flavor dark robust syrup. We still have sweet in the pan to push through the evaporator to finish the year. We need to get about 1100 gallons of sap to have enough permeate to clean the RO. We will save as much permeate as we can from the last ROing which may give us enough to run the 900 gallons and do a proper year end cleaning.
It was a miserable year for vacuum leaks. We had a hard time at the start getting above 12-13". I was also sick for a week and stayed out of the woods. We got to 18-19" and after several more trips around the woods and removing 6-8 taps which appears to be sources for leaks from the tree we are at 21-22". We have 2 releasers on one 5hp CDL vane pump. An older (8 years or so old) mechanical and new electric. If we shut the vacuum off to the mechanical I can get 26.5-27" with just the electrical releaser. We are giong to upgrade the mechanical releaser this year to electric.
Good luck to everyone for the final push. Monday it is forecasted to hit 60 here.

We finished up boiling today. Finished the year with 301 gallons. The sap was coming in so slow we would not get enough to boil for over a week. In addition several sugarmakers around are getting ropey sap. Soft maple buds are starting to open. The only thing missing are the peepers. Overall we made a little more than last year (274 gallons). We experienced our first electric releaser and it was a huge improvement over mechanical. I will put together a new post about that upgrade.

Congratulations on a good season. It’s always good to spend improvements and actually have a good season the first year you put these in use. The end is always bittersweet, but it’s time to move onto something else and start planning for next season.
I had 1000 gallons in the tank this morning at 5. The sap was near stopped this morning, but sense has picked up and is running 135 gph. Sap is testing at 1.1%. Hoping to make it through the upcoming snow storm and recharge the trees. Suppose to get 5-6 inches of snow tomorrow.

Only have about 300 gallons in the tank this morning. It was snowing at 5 this morning and the woods is froze up. I plan to keep the pump on until tomorrow and see if I get a run after the storm. Sap testing at 1.1% and vacuum dropped go 24 yesterday due to the heat. The end is near. A few of my neighbors are waiting out the storm also.

How much syrup did you end up with?
I didn’t boil this year. Exploring selling sap to a local buyer. I’m very happy with the outcome
Hope you all had a great year

I got 1800 gallons yesterday. Sap is testing at 1%. The woods is froze up right now but should get another run today. I think I’m going to shut the pump off Saturday morning.

Pulled the plug this afternoon. Sap was still running but the quality was not there. I beat last years number so I’m happy. May God bless you all.

Pulled all the taps out today. In the back part of the bush’s very large maple that the main line was connected fell down and literally buried the mainline in the root system. Not sure how I’m going to get it out yet but I’m scratching my head for the time being. Very thankful for the great season none the less. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter.
