We got hit with and unexpected Covid isolation order thanks to a school related possible contact. Everyone here is symptom free and "double negative" but 14 days in isolation is long. We're all out of Covid jail on Friday.
So, I've been super happy with the cold snap. Turned the taps off completely. Only have 500L or so of sap backlogged. It's been hard to hear the reports from my parents doing all the work while myself and my able bodied family sit around at home. Forecast shows things will pick up. Probably see another 500+ by Saturday. Looks like it will be a long batch boiling weekend.
Can't wait!
Certainly been a disappointing season to this point. I’ve collected about 600 gallons of sap so far. About 1/4 of what I had at this point last year. I always preach patients but the trees better thaw out and wake up soon because the long range forecast is not real promising. Hopefully the weatherman is wrong as usual or it could be a very short season.

It's not looking good. Cant compare to last year but compared to the year before we're at about 50%. This weekend looks good but beyond that it appears spring might be knocking! Hoping the weatherman has the long range forecast wrong!

2019 - 62 taps on buckets, 95L syrop from 3215L sap
2018 - 62 taps, collecting by hand, 90L syrop from 3200L sap
2017 - Lapierre Waterloo Small mini pro with 40 taps

Happy to report that my red Maple is finally starting to flow. Did not get much but its a start. I do have a leaky tap (See attached picture) However, my research says this should settle in a day or two. Out of curiosity after two days if there still sap leaking do you guys recommend some plumbers tape to stop the leak?

I certainly hope that the weatherman is wrong, only boiled once so far to sweeten the pans last Friday. Our best tree next to sugar house that will generally fill the buckets two to three times daily every day is barely running, small trees are outdoing it. Spent all day yesterday walking the bushes repairing leaks, just enough sap running to be able to check. Should be enough to fire again today, but we have a long way to go to make a season out of it and the calendar is winding down

Collected another 55+Gal last eve and boiled again.. Ran all night here and I will boil again. After today's collection which will likely be 100 Gal, I estimate I am at 20-25% crop

Only gathered around 60l so far but the trees ran last night. Very glad that I am NOT having a repeat of last year, though now with the new evap I could probably keep up if I did get those quantities again. So far my season has been more typical...slow start, freezeup for a few days, then they start again and this time in a little more earnest :-) Might have enough today to make it worth firing up the evap!
ETA: did fire up the evap, went from stone-cold to 225 in 25 minutes. Had a minor snafu to deal with or I'd be letting the fire die down now. I collected 8l more sap so it's in the tank, ready to go!
