    Default Kentucky Tapping

We tapped 111 taps, on Dec. 31, 2023. We started collecting a few days later. The first run gave us 13 twelve oz. jars. We have been collecting our 2nd run, since the 23rd. and have collected 265 gallons. Hopefully the season will keep on. Last year we tapped Jan. 21 and the season was short.

Tapped 55 trees 12/29. I've had concentrate in my freezer, in a snow bank, on ice and just now had enough to sweeten my pan and make 3/4 gal . Hope the weather settles in and starts being winter.........don't like the 55-60 deg. days.
1st year tapped 5 trees, boiled in pans on rock fire - really smokey taste
    2021 - 20 taps - 4 Gal on barrel stove and pans
    2022 - 9.1 Gal - 41 taps this year. 14 + 7 on 3/16" gravity vacuum. 20 in buckets/bags. DIY RO system - 2/3 water gone - amazing.
    2023 - 59 taps: 25 on 3/16" vacuum line/pump, 30 on 3/16" natural vacuum, 4 on bags. New 2x3 Badgerland pan anxious to try.

Yeah, the weather has been rough. I've only had a few days for a smaller run. I was hoping for a run today which hasn't worked out yet. Maybe I'll get something tomorrow. The weather hasn't reached the same highs as last year, but the result has been the same so far.

The weather hasn’t been kind to maple producers this year, lol. I use BOG (buckets on ground), so it’s been especially painful. I tapped New Year’s day hoping to catch some early runs that I missed last year, but we got hit with a 10 day freeze followed by a warm spell that has only occasionally relented to give us sap. We had a couple of favorable days early this week, but has warmed up since then. Saturday’s overnight temp is forecast to be in the upper 20’s so I’m hoping we’ll get another run Sunday. Next week we’re in the 70’s

Several southern West Virginia producers have thrown in the towel, last year I never got past Feb. the 18th, got a shot at March 1st, last two boils made some lite syrup, a good 60 gallons, sap today was 1.7, I’m told that is good? I used to get 2.0 sap all the time, so slightly disappointed.
