    Default Tapped in Durham

Put out 17 taps today on the easily accessed trees around the yard. Sap ran good from all. Even on a maple that didn't run at all last year. Tried to tap some other trees but quickly sank in the snow up to my knees. Should at least be able to sweeten the pan by the end of the week from these taps.
UPDATE: Went out this morning and collected 20 gallons on 17 taps that ran for only a half day. Some were over flowing. At 2.1%!

how much sap do you plan on collecting? I'm putting in 15 taps this year and not sure what to expect. I'm too late to order a real pan, so I'm going the steam tray method this year.

I'm guestimating 12-15 gallons of sap per tap. That should work out to .25 to .3 gallons of syrup per tap if the sugar content stays above 2%.

I tapped 11 more yesterday as the snow melted enough for me to get to the trees. I'll have to start boiling today or tomorrow.
Update: collected 20 gallons this morning from 19 taps at 2.8%!!

just tapped in 4 trees this afternoon. sap is running real good. Never tasted it before and i couldn't believe how sweet the sap is.
Now I've got to rush to set up an evap with steam pans.

Boiling away this weekend. I have 110 gallons to get through on my 2x3 evaporator. 90 gallons so far.
Update: ended up with a little more than 2.5 gallons of sweet golden syrup. Almost a years supply on my first boil!
