Eighteen inches will be safe depending on how you insulate and brick your arch. Don't worry too much about it that you turn away longer pieces. Those can go in length-wise so you can make your log cabin in the firebox.
Two and a half cord should be more than enough for 50 taps. The extra wood can be put toward the following season or used if you end up going past 50 this coming year. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I have a 2x5' and I cut my firewood to 16" length.
Some may laugh but I have an 8' length of 3/4" PVC pipe that has markings every 16" that I use to mark the firewood for cutting.
If I try to freehand cut I always end up with really short and way to long pieces.
Using this pole also makes my wood pile nice and neat when they are all cut to the same length.

Dennis,
I mounted a piece of brazing rod to the wrap-around handle of the saw with a hose clamp. It just bends if I'm in thick brush or in the way for any other reason. I made one for the right side too, by replacing the chain adjuster nut with a longer, custom made one which has a brazing rod crimped into it. Looks like a combo chain saw/TV antenna.![]()
