dhbiker1, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Maybe mine is different but I can't imagine so. There should be two grooves at the top of the rod. The weight is supposed to stay suspended. Maybe I am wrong. I suggest taking a look at Caseysugarshack's video. Click on one of the links on his posts.
Although maybe the weight rides on the float to force the fluid out faster in the smaller jars vs. larger ones.
