Default Bottling and selling in Pa.

Is there any other rules that I need to follow than what the department of ag has on their web site (see Below). i will be selling for the first time this year and i want to make sure I got it right.

the guidline says nothiing about grading the product per say, and there are a few other cloudy things about it. Hopefully you can help with this.

I think you are correct about the grading, it's just density that they check.

Also, just a warning if you sell retail, you must be inspected. (I've had many discussions with our local inspector.)

I need to get a license this year. Are the forms available online to apply for a maple license?

I think this is the application....near the end it has a check box for maple syrup. It's a Home Foods Processors Application. It still looks like it has to be mailed in though.

Here is the link to the page with all the forms...the above form is located at the bottom of the page.

I just went to the PA department of Ag and clicked on forms then went to search by bureau and searched the Bureau of food saftey and labratory services. Hope that helps.

Steve (TC), I had a visit from the Dept. of Ag. this summer. They saw my syrup in a store and saw I wasn't in their system. Told the lady she had to remove it from the shelf until it was resolved (that was kind of embarassing but we are all learning). Long story short- met with the inspector (was pretty unfamilliar with syrup) and he was impressed with my set-up. I am officially in the system and can sell. He made a few suggestions and wants to come back when I am boiling in the spring. My bottles are labeled with my name, address, Ph #, and grade, That seemed to satisfy him. I will never produce 1000 gallons but am considering getting a license anyway just so I can tell retailers I have it. Read your post about the new pan-sorry to hear about the original. Think things through and you can expand later with the new one. Dan.

Default Sell Syrup at local Farm Market

    Dan:

Sell retail direct and get top dollar. I am looking for a maple syrup vendor at Teddys Farm Market, Irwin, PA this summer. No problem selling all the syrup you have. E-mail me if you are interested: randy@morrisorganic.com

I talked with the local inspector this summer at a carnival about this. He asked me how I do everything and he said it seemed ok with him. Then he asked how much I make and I told him under 10 gallons and he said he probobly wouldn't even bother me. I could get inspected if I wanted to he said but the only avantage would be to say I've been inspected.

Seems as thought the rules are up for intertritation.

I do believe Title 3 - Chapter 61 has since been repealed in PA. Act 106 of 2010 (3 C.S §§5701 et.al.) along with Federal Grading Standards now take precedence.
