nova scotia 2025
tapped last sunday 23/02/25 bear river ns.
had a decent run wednesday to flush lines, and had 250l last night at supper time 75 taps on natural vacuum

i'm over on the south shore. got part of my 2 gravity lines ready except for the steepest part, because of the ice and snow i just can't get to those tree yet. on the 2 shurflo lines, i've got to get my solar panels set up yet. hope to be ready shortly. nothing running yet on those few i've tapped. i have all reds so that is normal for here. they will be ready when some of the ground ice/snow clears and the warmer weather latter this week comes.
-
I think I'll tap my 50 reds tomorrow as I see the temps look like they are going to climbing again. I guess I missed the 3 or 4 day window of optimal temps last week, but hard to say if the trees were still asleep after that long cold winter. Low pressure system coming this mid week might lure that sap out of the holes!! I use the ol' spile and tube method, feeding into sealed ice cream buckets. Some tree don't yield much, and others are great.....so hard to tell. Some year I might look into the system you use nhdog, at least on a few of the trees to see if I can increase the yield a bit. Trying to keep it simple tho.

I ended up tapping 40 reds late Tuesday afternoon and collected whatever I could today. I ended up with ~45L of sap, or ~1L per tree....although only 5 or so are doing most of the heavy lifting and many are not giving up much at all yet.

about the same over here. i taped my 2 vac lines yesterday. the 1 sugar i have was running pretty well but that was about it except a few were wet. bitter cold with the g.d. wind. wife came out and was a great help, don't get around like i use to. when the wind dies a little latter, i'l set out the batteries and they will be ready to go. the wind this am has been avg. about 16+km gusting to 44 km. still got my gravity lines to tap yet.
-
i was way behind this year but the last few day have been pretty good. finally got enough sap that i'l be boiling all day tomorrow.
-
we've had a couple good runs, this week has been good, but the weather for this week is not good, all warm. worried it's going to be a real short season.. 15L finished sofar, usually do 50-60L in a season

We managed to collect ~330 litres over ~1.5 weeks from my reds, and boiled it all down today on my WF Mason hobby evaporator. Luckily most of the sap had ice/slush in the storage buckets to help preserve it over that time. Ended up with 4 litres/1 gallon of a beautiful amber butterscotchy flavoured finished. Not a great yield at all, but we will enjoy every last drop!!

This is going to turn out to be the worst year ever. Both environment Canada and accuweather reports for our area have nothing but warm weather and rain for the rest of the month. No real below-freezing temperatures until the last two days of March and that's questionable. Also, it's probably not worthwhile trying to carry on any longer. Oh well, there's always next year.

I don't foresee another opportunity to collect anymore significant quality sap with this warm weather streak at the moment. That might be it for me too. Nhdog: how much finished did you end up with in the end, and was your yield in the low 1.5%ish range like mine?
