    Default Tapping Feb 1st ???

Hello Ontario ... who's going to tap this weekend ?

The Accuweather 15 day forecast shows 7 days with daytime temps above
    freezing.

Do you think it will be worth tapping this soon ????

Brent, Febuary is usally one of the coldest months here in Ontario. I think I'm going to do the tradiational first weekend in March, the weather may warm up a little in feburay but for the most part is generally freezing till march. I tapped in febuary one time, did run at all and I missed the last good run on the year do to dryed holes....

Me too ( in Quebec )
I am not going to tap until last week February. But thats because I'll be away on a business trip until late Feb. My understanding is that the hole drying is more a function of bacteria growth during the warm spells. We all got that ( here in the North East ) regardless of when we actually tapped.
You should be able to tap any time now. Use clean taps and drop lines ( the newer the better ) Taphole drying has more to do with bacteria/yeast in the drop line, than with when you tap.

bret take a cold shower that feeling will subside soon
if your that horny to tapp then do a test tree
    check it 5 times a day .
    10 times on sunday's
2 or 3 weks of that will tell you that the sap runs in march ,when the sun is high in the sky .
thats when a young mans fancy turns to maple syrup.

brent what i am doing is i got 2 tes trees on is by the river and the other is up on top of the hill beside the house and when one starts to run the we can tap but that last deep freeze really froze the ground maybee 3 feet down so the chances that this wheather heats up the roots with all that snow on top is very slim but you never know it could happen just keep an eye out and be ready

I was spitting in the bush this afternoon.
As far as the ax head went, it was frozen solid.
Cold without snow made a pretty deep freeze.
Hadn't thought of that aspect yet.
Supposed to be 9deg C here mid week.
Might get enough to try the RO by next weekend.

You, the kid and me should be very happy today.

Yesterday Accweather was showing 12 of the next 15 days were going to be above freezing. Today they made major changes and we're back to most days below freezing.

I was having nightmares of buddy sap on March 5

Brent do you actually have any faith in Accweather? I found them wrong almost more than all the time! I always go by the Weather Network now, they seem to be close some of the time.

I would like to be a weather forecaster, be wrong most of the time and still keep your job!!
