    All joking aside, I had a similar scenario with a pileated head woodpecker and a cherry tree in my yard. It went bonkers on it for days and actually fell the tree (~18 -20 inch diameter tree).

    Watched it all happen out my window while working remote. Was unreal.

    What you have, my friend, is a very large woodpecker, called a pileated woodpecker. Beautiful to see, hard on dead trees. As large as a crow, we have them around here all the time. They really seem to love dead and dying poplar trees.
