Weather looks good for the next 7 days. Keep your fingers crossed maybe we'll make some more syrup yet.

We put 200 taps in around 2/27. Sap flows have decent so far. Collected over 200 gals today alone so the new Smoky Lakes is going to get a work out tonight.

    Happy sugaring to you all!

Hello Mounder - This is your neighbor from Oregon that makes syrup in Iowa. We are thinking about a Smoky Lake. How do you like yours by now?

We like it very much. We purchased the hybrid pan several seasons ago and added the Corsair arch this year. It seems to be evaporating nicely. We are feeding wood on a stack temp now instead of the clock, which is also going well. Everyone at Smoky Lakes was great to deal with. We have quite a few of their things around the sugarhouse these days. Not a bad drive from our neck of the woods either, plus it gave us an excuse to spend a few days in Door County this summer!

Pulled my taps yesterday. Currently sitting at 1 gallon and a 1/2 pint of syrup made. I have 5 gallons of sap in the fridge from my trees and thanks to a fellow syrup maker have an additional 20 gallons of sap to boil. So today I'm doing the last boil of the year.

Sap holding at 2%. Yield going down, I'm at 66% of last year's production, it is getting a little cloudy but making good syrup.Hoping to get another week, we'll see.Marc
