So I finally finished all my frozen nearup and bottled the last of it this weekend.

My total for the year: ~1,240L of sap collcted, and 34.5L of syrup made for a final ratio of approx 36:1. Not as sweet as last year, but not as bad as I was anticipating.

I had a record year this year.
Hope everyone has a great summer!
    Paul.

That's a great yield for 2021 Paul. Many of us were dealing with 1.5% sap for much of the season and I've heard from many producers who got 2/3 of a crop. These darn gypsy moth caterpillars everywhere and on everything won't help the 2022 sugar content either! I really hope this is their peak year and we're not dealing with them again next summer. Some of the oak trees are already more than 50% stripped.

Thanks Martin. It definitely ended up better than I anticipated.. I think I had a mid-season batch of sap that was higher sugar because when I tested the first batch of sap it was around 1.7% give or take.

Hmm.. I haven't actually been paying attention to the Gypsy moths although I've heard they are bad this year but for some reason wasn't sure what that meant.. so they like to eat leaves I guess.. that's no good.

I've noticed one my of Silvers has a lot of black spots on the leaves which I thought might be due to the dry conditions.. I'd better have a good look at trees this weekend.. Thanks for the heads up!

Well so far, so good in my neck of the woods.. not seeing gypsy moth caterpillar damage over here (and hopefully I haven't jynxed it!). Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Our gypsy moth caterpillars stopped defoliating trees a few weeks ago - and either died from the virus that's starting to knock them back, or have since turned into moths. Luckily they've mostly left the maples alone but they have hammered the oaks. I really really really hope this year was the worst and they are non-existent next year.

Hopefully the mass die off ensures a better year next year. I haven't noticed any of the caterpillars around, but I have seen about 1/2 dozen male moths around the house over the past few weeks.. they are pretty cute little things with those big ear-looking antennas.. LOL. I'm glad your maples are doing well, Martin!
