I can tell you what works for me. I wouldn't put more than 25 taps per line,(research confirms this) as I have had some sap back up during good runs and slow down the top trees. I have my tote at the low point on the property which puts it from 25 ft to 500 ft from the last tap depending on the line. I have 12 lines going into the 275 gal tote. I have 85 ft drop from highest tap. I have 250 taps total. I now use 5/16 drops with all 3/16 lines. I take all 12 lines down and spend quite a bit of time cleaning as 3/16 can get plugged with drill bit shavings if you aren't careful and use the right tapping bit. Best of luck!
No more than 30 taps per run. I prefer to have 14 to 25 taps per run. Avoid flat sections at the bottom of your run if possible.
Remember to keep on ticking while the sap is dripping.
2016- 50 buckets. Made 4 gallons.
2022- 3750 taps + Smartrek! Made 1300 gallons.
2023- 3750 taps after removing a pump house and connected two woods. Made 800 gallons.
In regards to collection tank, it depends more on your drop than distance. If you still have drop past the last tap then you can continue your tubing run and it will help your natural vacuum. If there is no drop past your last tap then put the tank there as 3/16 and flat don't do well.
Now you will ask how flat is too flat? I don’t think there is a lot of research on this but I think in general anything less than 5% slope (under the assumption of no pump) your natural vac benefits start to be reduced by friction.
