Odd ball question here, but of curiosity, is there any studies that show run weather patterns having an affect on the sap or the trees themselves?

For example, this season we seem to have temps that are too cold for sap to run for days or weeks, then all the sudden, 24-48 hours straight where the sap runs day and night. Then, more days that are too cold for the sap to run. Just wonder what effect those 24-48 hour stretches of 40 degrees can have on the trees, and wondering if it can accelerate the process of them waking up for spring?
