Default Beer keg for syrup storage

I have done some research on the forum reference using a 15.5 gallon sankey style keg for short term storage of finished syrup. I am a small producer and wondered about the feasibility of or ease of using kegs over a smaller SS drum. I wondered about the placement of the center bung over one that is located off center.

I don't but several producers use beer kegs. I think many cut the fitting off and weld on a more user friendly type, some make them a Tri clamp style.
Dave Klish, I recently ordered a 2x6 wood fired evaporator from A&A Sheet Metal which I will be converting to oil fired
Now have solar, 2x6 finish pan, 5 bank 7x7 filter press, large water jacketed bottler, and tankless water heater.
Recently bought another Gingerich RO, this one was a 125, but a second membrane was added thus is a 250, like I had.
    After running a 2x3, a 2x6, 3x8 tapping from 79 taps up to 1320 all woodfired, now I'm going to a 2x6 oil fired and a 200-425 taps.

Don’t need to change anything. 2” triclamp cap can be put right on. You can buy special gaskets with only one ridge or use a silicone gasket with both ridges.

I have a fellow producer that I have sold beer kegs to that has Jim from Smokey Lake weld sanitary fittings on them. They cut them down so you can stack the drums without interference from the bung. He has about 40 kegs and he hot pack then for long term storage. He uses clamps and covers No valves.

YUP I get kegs all the time at the scrap yard and I have a clear conscious.

I use beer kegs for long term storage. The ones that I have can't be stacked and the bung is on the side which is a PITA. I've never had a problem with spoilage with them and will continue to use them until I can upgrade to something more user friendly.

We use 5,7.75,and 15.5 gallon kegs for long term storage, they work great , the best thing is both ends are rounded so they empty completely and are very easy to wash

Are they the sankey style and/or the pepsi style pop syrup kegs?

Maple River Sorry for the misunderstanding I read the thread heading and then saw you converted the conversation to soda syrup storage containers. I have used that style tank and didnt like the odd ball fittings and inside flip top opening. When hot packed and cooling process they pulled in outside air.

We called them Cornelius tanks. I ran across about 35 of them in a scrap yard and picked them up cheap. I didn't use them and put an add in the paper and beer guys were fighting over them.

I was asking a question about the 5, 7.75 gallon kegs Windy Acres was using, I wans't aware of kegs that small other than the corny kegs.

The 5 and 7.75 have the same fitting as the 15.5, we have had great luck with the beer kegs
