Simple color coded dot on the bottom of the jug is what I came up with this year. Corresponds with the sample of that bottling batch.

We label ours by batch and year. 118 is batch #1 year 2018. 1118 is batch #11 year 2018. The amount and sizes we bottled are recorded in our log book. In talking with the inspector years ago, it is a good way to separate some of the syrup if there ever was an issue with it.
I also use a sharpie and a simple batch code on the bottom of the jug. 3 or 4 digits.
Road's End Farm - Starting small with no end in sight!
We also use a simple code for each batch, for example, 18-1 stands for batch one, bottled in 2018. This number is written on each bottle bottom for all bottles filled from that batch with a permanent marker. We also write that number on the sample bottle we fill and save from each batch, along the grade of the batch. We maintain a record of the date each batch was processed.
