Here in Peoria I haven't seen any buds in my bush of sugar maples. But in my front yard my silver maples have large buds. What kind of maples are you seeing buds?

Reds and silvers are the only ones swelling up right now. As long as you don't hit a string of 60 degree or more days they won't pop. We have a deep freeze coming that will probably kill some buds here. Two years ago the silver maple buds popped then we went into a deep freeze. It killed them all and extended the season for another 300gallons of sap.

Same here. I have 1 silver in my yard with buds but none of my sugars are budding. Cold weather is going to give us another good run.
