Soap is alkaline based and acid is just that, acid. They are used to break down deposits in your membrane to allow it to run efficiently. Just trying to figure out all this ro stuff myself. Ph is important when cleaning the membranes. Best thing to do is check out your membrane specs and do as they say.

Soap is used as a cleaning agent after each sap concentration cycle. ( some people only rinse after every concentration cycle and soap wash every other one). Citric acid is used to clean your membrane when the performance drops below 10-15%. The instruction book should have instructions on bench marking your clean membrane at the start of the season after your first rinse with clean water low in minerals and slight hardness. If you do not bench mark your membrane at the start of the season and every use thereafter, you will not know when the performance on the membrane drops 10-15%.

I may have worded that wrong. What I meant was what actually is the soap and what is the acid and what's the best place to get it? JoeJ mentions citric acid. O.K. I got that now what is the soap?
    Thanks for the help.

RO soap is sodium hydroxide. With some other additives. But probley just for buffering. All the dealers sell it. I use the CDL brand soap. Comes in powder.
I use Citric Acid for acid washing. I just buy it at the natural food store in a 5 lb bag.
