The RV grade pumps commonly used for maple sap pumps are not waterproof but there are marine grade pumps that are available which are rated as waterproof. For example, Shurflo makes a model 4148 which is a waterproof version of their 4048 model. Cost is a little higher. I have ordered some different ones to test.

Thank you very much, that was very helpful. I also found a slightly less expensive, less powerful Marine Shurflo : Aqua-King II Water Pump 3GPM model 4138.

I think I will either get the 4148 or the 4138. I will feel confident that it is meant for moving fresh water and that it will stand up being outside.
