    Default Bottling question

    Do we really need to use mason jars with Maple Syrup? I have a local supplier I use for my Honey and can get 750 ml jars at a great price. However screw on lids. I know people use plastic jugs but they are expensive. If I bottle hot and turn them over will that seal them so I can sell some?

    Is honey packed hot or cold? The plastic used for honey containers might not stand up to a liquid near 190F....
    It's all about the perennials....

    I would think, if the seal is on the lid and can withstand the heat @185* Go for it. I would make sure the jars are hot before adding syrup. Turn them upside down over night. JMO

    Thanks for the replies folks. As far as the Honey goes it is packed room temperature and I use glass bottles.

    If the jar can take 185-190 degree syrup and if the lid has a good seal, you can. I'd test a few to verify they will seal. If no seal the syrup will mold unless you store it in the freezer. It will not freeze.

    We never heat our honey past what Ma Nature and the bees do. above 105 F or so starts killing enzymes and what not. Grocery store honey has usually been pasteurized. We sell outs as Raw, pure, strained, not filtered, still has enzymes and pollen. We keep everything hospital clean. We steam sterilize jars and what not before bottling, wash and rinse the plastic in hot water- about 115F .

    We do not heat much past what it takes to get it flowing, ours is strained only, and has all the good stuff in it . That being said I only have 10 gallons of honey left as I got wiped out by Yogi lastt fall. Tried to catch a swarm as we get a few a year but not this year. so I was most likely catching my own swarms. I really don't miss the work.
