How fast you have it boiling? I wouldnt boil less than 1 hour. So if you only get 30 gph then 30 gal min. If you get 50 gph... then 50 gallons.

Took me a full tote 275 gallon until I even seen a drop of syrup, but I think my sap was about 1 percent. It would take about 20 gallon just to fill the pans, so I would say 50-60 gallons would be safe to boil for an hour or two.
I like to have 200 gals to start. I'm running at about 25gph. First 5 hr boil sweetened the pan. Started drawing off after 1 hr into the second boil. I could probably start with less, but the evap really gets humming after a few hours,so l keep it running as long as possible.

We have a RO we use with our 2X6. Our 2X6 processes about 25 gph. I would say the quantity of syrup needed to fire it up may very depending on raised or drop flues. But, when you fire it the first time you want enough to get everything up to a good boil so the sap can keep for a bit. We used to run about 200 gallons through ours to get the color up and almost ready for a draw off.

Edited: Just got to thinking about how to figure the quantity. Figure your cubic feet or inches of volume to be properly filled and use a converter to estimate the gallons required.
Tapping since 1985 (four generations back to early to mid 1900s). 200-250 taps on buckets and then tubing in the mid 90s. 2013- 275 taps w/sap puller 25 gal. 2014-295 taps w/sap puller 55 ga. (re-tapped to vacuum theory) 2015-330 taps full vac. 65 gal, 2016-400 taps 105 gal, 2017-400 taps 95 gal. 2018-additional 800' mainline and maybe 400 new taps for a total near 800 taps. 2x6 Leader WSE (last year on it) supported by a 250 gph RO.
I get about 35gph on my 2x6 drop flue with forced air. I also have an ro now thank god. I wouldn't start without having 100 gallons to boil without the ro. Remember u need sap for shutting down and cooling off too if u are burning wood

I agree 20-30 to fill then depending on temp,wind,humidity,wood you will need 2-250gal to sweeten it all up
I run 2 2x6's side by side in series. It takes approximately 20-25 to fill a raised flue pan and an additional 5 gallons to full the syrup pan. I wouldn't bother starting a fire with less than 80 gallons of sap on hand.

I don't want to light a fire for less than 150 gallons on the first boil and 100 gallons from then on. It takes time to get all that firebrick hot and things moving. We can do between 25-30 gallons an hour depending on who is filling the firebox. Once we stop firing, we can evaporate 15-20 gallons on cool down.
