    Default New Brusnwick

I am reasonably new to maple syrup production, got my first real evaporator from CDL this year. I will have approximately 90 taps in 2017.

    A couple questions.

I am looking for a hint as to when some other folks will begin tapping this year? All taps on 3g buckets.

I am also looking for a good water tank to transport sap in if anyone has one at a reasonable price with about 200g. capacity.

We are in Hartland area, usually tap first week of March. Where are you ? Not sure where to tell you to find a tank, just to think outside the box, you can improvise with a lot of things .

    Hi Murray,

    Thank you for your reply.

I will be tapping a woodlot on the Kingston Peninsula and a few trees at my house in Fredericton.

    Hey Big Daddy,

Ive been tapping in Fredericton for the last four years. Usually, between end of Feb - mid March. I usually wait for a favorable weather outlook. I've tapped as early as middle of February and as late as end of March.

That makes sense. I tried to do the same thing the last couple of years, but felt like last year I tapped way to early. Looks to be cold the next 2 weeks at least, so I am aiming for March 1st. Just always nice to know when other people are going to bite the bullet and start tapping.

I'm with Dscanuck, last weekend of Feb to 1st of March.

My first year had the classic January thaw we saw this year...I nearly lost my mind trying to tap fast enough as I thought it would be early and I'd miss it. I didn't, and ended up with some dry holes by the time it started to flow. I tapped on the last weekend in Feb last year and had my barrels full in just a few days. Then it slowed till after March break.

The full moon in March, third full moon of the year, is the Sugar Moon...and last year that was when I had the most sap. I don't have enough experience to definitively say there is a correlation but it worked last year!

Good luck and be patient....the sunami will come.

2017 - 138 taps, 225 gallons of sap, 5.55 gallons of dark syrup, still procrastinating on the vac.
2018 - ~150 taps, I lost track of the sap it was incredible!, over 20 gal of syrup, all dark.

Unfortunately, as a small hobbyist, I'll be skipping this year as the big snowfall really made it impossible for me to tap my trees as a reasonable height.

But if I were partaking this year, I'd be tapping now as all next week looks like a killer good run week.

What a shame. You guys out east really got hammered with the last storm. I'll cross my fingers for you that your season will be a long one and that you might see an opening for tapping in a couple of weeks. Hang in there!

I have about 20 taps left for my regular runs and I have two more neighbours asking if I'd tap their trees....my trees are mostly Reds and they were just seeping a little when I poked a hole in them. I have one run of sugars on a steep hill and they were flowing nicely. I'd say we are off to the races...fingers crossed for a good year!

DSCanuck I'm in Fredericton from time to time if you need a hit to satisfy the addiction let me know ;-) I know it won't be the same as your own though.....never is.
