Default Hudson Valley... and around the Taconics

This coming weekend (Jan 19-23, 2017) in the mid-Hudson valley looks pretty amazing... lows are around 30º, highs around 45º. Anyone in the area testing a few taps?

Last year was my first year tapping and I tapped January 25th. I knew it was earlier than usual but the forecast looked right and I was eager so I went for it. Turned out to be the right time. Beginner’s luck.

Now it’s a week earlier than last year and the forecast looks right for the next ten days. I’m going to put the finishing touches on the evaporator and tap. I’m in northern Dutchess county.
2019-2023 40 to 50 taps to get 8 to 10 gallons of syrup
2018 Built the sugar shack, produced 10.5 gallons (converted some to sugar,& cream). taps varied 45 to 50
2017 Built 2x4 arch for a divided pan, 8.5 gallons from 30 taps increased to 42 taps during season.
    2016 Produced 3 gallons & 1 quart Syrup, Block arch & 3 buffet pans, 12 taps
    2015 Thought about tapping

I live in the town of Newburgh and I have about 18 taps in so far and have produced three bottles of syrup from about 10-15 gallons of sap. Tomorrow January 27th I will check my buckets and boil again.

I'm in Hillsdale, NY. Always anxious to start, I tapped in late December. I put out 100 taps and had 4 great runs. I have made 19 gallons of syrup so far and the taste of the 2nd (1/3-1/5)and 3rd (1/9-1/12)runs was the best I have ever made. Flavor was buttery. I will put out 100 more taps this week for normal run. Hope you all have a great season!

Finally got my taps out yesterday. Collected 30 gal from 15 taps, avg. 3.4%. Checked my block arch and it was a mess. Had to replace stack and redo the insulation among other things. Don't have another day off till Wed. May have to take off Sunday and hope it ain't spoiled. Hope I'm not too late to the show.
