I've been wetting my filter press papers for a few seasons now, I'm surprised that you hadn't heard about it before. Adapting my hand pump press to an air/diaphragm pump created a whole lot of problems and wetting the papers was one of the things that I did to make them seal better. I also double them up on the end plate to keep the syrup off of the ceiling.
