It appears to be growing at the equator. I would be highly suspicious.

I would tap it and realize that it may need to be removed in the near future.

The tree appears to have had a rough life. I had one like that on a old field edge. When the field was cleared in the 1800 entire trees were pulled to the homestead with teams of horses. The branches would scrape the entrance trees and peel off bark patches to about 25-30 feet up. Mine got blown down in a wind storm and all those odd spots were dead wood covered by regrowth.

But that tree heated the house for a while and the ashes went back to the sugar bush.

Why not. It's not like you should worry about its long term potential. Challenge is to find some good wood between the burs to sink a tap in

Some times those type of trees can really surprize you. Tap it and check the SC, nothing to lose.

She's not a beauty, but suck down some hard cider and she'll start to pretty up.
Soon she'll start to look as good as the rest of the trees, and you'll convince yourself that all the sap is the same.
You may have some regrets, but it's better than walking away and having to buy some sap.
