Any ideas on how I can attach a custom made base stack to this block arch? Chimney blocks are 16 in, would like to put in a 10 or 12 in stainless stack.

Not sure if I am looking at it correctly, it looks like the smoke will head out the back thru the blocks. Could base stack slide right over the blocks, which may help support the base stack?

Hi Toquin,
Not sure exactly what you are trying to do. From your photos it looks like you have a masonry chimney to which your arch is connected.
1. It looks like there is some restriction in the "thimble" or channel between the arch and the chimney. Can you increase the size of this opening? Ideally you would want to be as wide and deep as the chimney flu.
2. It looks like the masonry chimney is right against (touching?) a plywood board on the back side. When we built the chimney in our home (20+ years ago) I think the required airspace clearances were 2"between the masonry and the house framing. However because we crank the temps in our evaporators way beyond a wood stove, I would go with much more air space between masonry and the combustible structure of your saphouse.
If you are looking to switch to a steel stack, you could use firebrick and high temp. mortar to create a smoke box outside (behind) your arch with a round opening that the SS stack could drop into.
Just thinking out loud.

remove the masonry chimney, get a piece of 3/16 plate steel place over the blocks even with the arch plasma cut out a hole for what you want to do. Get a piece of flat stock make a rim around your hole you cut out. Pick up some ceramic blanket with stainles bolts and nuts insulate the bottom of the steel. Your done.
If your concerned with air space wrap the chimney in ceramic blanket, I know a sugar who did this with his 14" stack where it goes through the roof rafters it worked awesome.
