still holding off from tapping if you can trust the ten day forecast looks like cold for some time to come and a later start for this year. Hope its wrong.

same here, the 10 day doesn't show much promise. we have consistently tapped 2-3 days earlier each yr then the previous yr for the past 7 yrs... until this yr.
Mo too! Old Man ain't done yet!
I tapped my tubing last weekend and have the vacuum pump on now. The sap is coming in but real slow. I'm thinking that the long range forecast is probably wrong and we will see a warm up in a week. At least that's what I am hoping for!

For those of us that are new, and already tapped did we do any long term harm? Once it warms will it start flowing?
Certainly will.
How much affect does all this snow have on the trees? I was always told that the snow has to melt back away from the base of the tree to have any "good" runs.
1,200 taps on USFS land, 3x8 King w/Steamaway. Lapierre RO.
Used to have an old neighbor that said a thunderstorm during sugaring, meant 3 weeks to follow with no sap due to cold weather. We had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. I hope he's wrong, but the time I heard him say that which was probably about 25 years ago, it stayed below freezing for close to 3 weeks and some days never got much above zero. We had tapped the 3rd week of February and made syrup that week, had the storm and didn't run for almost three weeks. Then broke loose and went on to have a record year. So don't loose hope yet. Long way to go until spring.
