I think I read that the NASS numbers take the census data submitted and add a % to account for those who lie or don't submit at all. I'm not sure how they know what % to add, but it is likely in the ballpark.

Dave Klish, I recently bought a 2x6 wood fired evaporator from A&A Sheet Metal which I will be converting to oil fired
Now have solar, 2x6 finish pan, 5 bank 7x7 filter press, large water jacketed bottler, and tankless water heater.
Recently bought another Gingerich RO, this one was a 125, but a second membrane was added thus is a 250, like I had.
After running a 2x3, a 2x6, 3x8 tapping from 79 taps up to 1320 all woodfired, now I'm going to a 2x6 oil fired and a 200-425 taps.
My almanac arrived in the mail today. If I had to guess, it looks like whoever did the layout/template for the first page of each state where they indicate taps, gallons produced and yield per tap copied the page from Connecticut, changed the heading to NH, and forgot to change the numbers.
The rest of the numbers in the NH report are what I had heard last summer, with 460,000 taps and production of 124,000 gallons.
What is crazy to look at for me is the NH historical data. If I am reading it right, it looks like in 1917 NH made 936,000 gallons of syrup. All with buckets....

yeah from our tour of Bascom's at the summer meeting Bruce showed us a chart that he started many years ago and how they have grown in number of taps vs syrup made. and they are at about 75,000+ taps and made roughly 28,000 gallons of syrup for 2013 if I remember correctly.
I don't know the tap count but on the next page Bodie peters (NHMPA President) said for the 2013 production was close to 130,000 gallons and I would say most of those numbers don't count all the little producers either. or maybe it does I don't know???

Hi folks,
Yes, we put out the U.S. Maple Syrup Almanac (it comes free with your Maple News subscription) and we goofed on the title page of New Hampshire. The data on the inside pages (starting on page 45) is correct however. 460,000 taps in New Hampshire in 2013, according to USDA data supplied to us.
It is also correct that there is a lot of underreporting out there.
