That may be the issue. You should have the valve closed when you open the propane tank knob.

Thanks for that advice as well. You'd think that it would be a wise idea for the manufacturer to include instructions in the box with the fryer if the unit can be rendered ineffective by not starting it in a certain way. I really appreciate the insight I've received on here from you guys. Hopefully this will solve my problem.
