I lined my 2x6 with 1/4" or 3/8" ceramic blanket, then fit the firebrick in. I hope to build a sugar house in the near future and will be moving the rig, decided not to cement the bricks in place at this time.
So far it has worked out well, figured that the extra insulation wouldn't hurt.

I've used fiberglass insulation to seal between my pan and block, back when i had a block arch and it held up very well. I cant emagine why it wouldnt behind fire brick with no flames touching it. It would be the flames that would be the problem not the heat, but thats just my opionion.

My arch looks to have insulation on the side walls. IT came this way when I bought it. Arch is 3 years old and looks new. 2 1/2 x10 evaporator. Fire brick had to be removed to move it. The bottom of the arch has ceramic blanket. For the price I would just put in ceramic blanket ( just ordered some 1"x24"x25' (50 sq ft) for $56.00. Best price I found www.ceramaterials.com
