Maybe if they were making dill pickle or olive flavored ice cream! Lol I have been using plastic pails that have had all sorts of different food products in them and I have never had any complaints about the syrup tasting funny. Just wash them a couple of times and give them a good rinse.

I had used ice cream pails for years with no problems other than after about 8 years they get brittle and fall apart.
