I thought about that, but then how do you get the sap from the feed tank to the preheater and still be able to raise and lower the hood? I like to be able to lift it to clean/prevent burns/etc.
Sure do, with the preheater the hood won't sit flush on the pan. It shouldn't matter too much. It seems I can keep the hood off of the pan a few inches and still get all the steam.

Can I piggyback on that PM? I would like to set that up for next year (not gonna pour any more money into it this year!!) Thanks.
So, after seeing some pretty nice preheaters on here, I took some extra pieces of copper I had laying around and put together a preheater for my Mason 2X4XL. It sits on aluminum angle and c channel...
Thanks for the input. I modified my hood with a drip channel made of 3/4" SCDL 40 PVC that I cut about 1/4 away. I have a drain on the one side so I can collect the condensation. I am currently...
Did my first test boil last night with my homemade hood. However, it seems as though the hood can't keep up with the steam, and my smallish room quickly filled up with steam. My dad said the room...
I can fab a hood out of aluminum, but what about the exhaust pipe? I can only seem to find it in galvanized. Will that make a difference?
Thanks everyone for the help. I think I will try to just smooth it a little and the run a little deeper. Took a few hour to scrape the char off, but it's shiny now!!
Ok, so this isn't the first time I've burnt my pan, but this time warped the last section pretty good. Can I take a plastic deadblow hammer and try to flatten it again? Should I be afraid of...
I just used some white vinegar in mine after I burnt the craps out if it. Nice and shiny now.
I want to boost the efficiency of my Mason 2X4XL. I have it bricked with half bricks in the entire arch. Can I lay 2" Ceramic blanket in the arch on top of the bricks to boost insulation, or is it...
I am building the same thing, but I want to place the jaws of the vice grips as close to the bar as possible to eliminate the sidewards flex incurred when applying force. That may also eliminate...
Thanks a lot for all the help. I did add a blower part way through the season. It did help. I was able to get my stack glowing using seasoned cherry, maple and oak. I am leaning towards selling...
Seriously? I got 88 views, but no one can help me on this? I just want to know if anyone else has done this, or if it is even worth the work. Someone? Anyone?
I bought a Mason 2X4 Hobby XL this year with big ideas. I put in 90 taps and could hardly keep up with production. I would like to expand next year, but I already sunk a lot of money into this rig....
Thanks everyone. I am sure it is the butress thread. It is too coarse to be NPT. I love getting help from this forum.
I have a Mason 2X4 XL. I was thinking of constructing a manifold with black iron pipe. The only problem is running a new gas line to my shack. I am sure that will cost a bit, plus create a lot of...
Does anyone know where to find a fitting for a threaded valve on a 300gal cage tank? My intent is to step it down in size to assist in filling 5 gal buckets to take to the evaporator.
I was wondering if anyone has converted a wood burning arch to one that fires using natural gas. I get free gas (to a point) and was thinking that I would have more control over heat, would be able...
I got mine clean with a small putty knife. I was real careful scraping the burnt sugar off. I have since fired it back up and boiled. Seems that if you don't burn the sap, your syrup comes out a...
Thanks guys. It wasn't so much a fueling issue as it was I was trying to use the continuous flow method to get close to syrup out of the discharge. However, I thought the finished product was too...
OK, so I finally got my Mason 2X4 up and running last weekend. Unfortuneatly, I wasn't paying as much attention as I needed and ended up burning a 6" section on the pan. I have it cleaned up, but I...
