I had a big boil two days ago and I am having another today. I am boiling 52 gallons I collected yesterday and I still have to collect today’s sap. I likely will be between 70 and 80 gallons to boil....
The sap ran extremely well overnight and this morning the best I have ever seen it.
Boiled again today, boiled 32 gallons and made 4L of syrup.
The cone filter in the sailor hat shape, supported by the 16” stainless steel pipe, is still working great.
...
I guess I did not stick with my original goal: “My goal is at the end of the ice fishing period, near the end of March, to tap the trees for 7 to 10 days, to gather about 120 gallons of sap, to make...
I boiled 32 gallons today and made 4.2 L, which was a little more than I expected.
I made the sailor hat again in the cone filter. I had a 16” long stainless steel pipe, that I stood up in the pot...
Sap should flow really well tomorrow and maybe Saturday. It will be too warm for a few days for sap flow after that.
I will be boiling Saturday with the sap I collected this week.
I read a news article of people tapping in your area. Sap should flow the next two days there and from March 6 onward.
Thanks, I will give that a try. Tomorrow I am going to town and see if I’d an McQuiver some stainless steel items as well.
I did have a cone filter holder that I could have reversed and used, but...
Just two thoughts from my last boil and filtering.
I had mentioned that as soon as I remove a filter, I put it into a bucket of clean water. I let the filters sit overnight in the bucket and the...
These are some of the colours of the syrup I have made this year.

I am always a little off traditional practices, but I make what I think is great syrup. Use the sap tap app for determining the temperature to make syrup at your location and for the barometric...
The sap flow is still looking great up to March 8 and counting. Yesterday’s sap flow rivaled peak season flows.
We had a very late ice in and we are shaping up to have a very early ice out. Our...
[QUOTE=Brien;413820]Didn’t you have a pavilion you boiled under last year.? I know you did a major downsizing this year, did you also move the location of where you are boiling.?
I still...
The sap ran well today, better than expected. My buddy who has a larger setup, collected 900 L of sap. That almost fills his new 1100 L storage tank.
I collected 45 gallons of sap, and it took me...
The sap flowed well yesterday and really well today. My buddy collected over 900 L and I doubled my previous best under this new hobby scenario.
Sap should run today and tomorrow. I added a second fire bowl for the expected sap flow next week.

The sap is not running quite as fast...
I still find the sap tap app helpful. It does tell me when to start checking, which can be different on different days. Most people verify the Brix with a hydrometer, I choose to do it with a...
Sap may flow tomorrow, certainly Wednesday and maybe some Thursday and Friday. The next week is still looking special.

Although it can change, as it often does, this one has remained consistent and shows on a number of different weather providers. It may not happen, but I feel 80% sure it will.
I am really interested in seeing the long range forecast next weekend to see just how long the mild spell will last.
If it lasts long enough into March, our lake ice could go out. It is only...
I have had five boils so far this season, (just small volumes) and will have another one this coming week. Looking at the long range forecast, it looks like an extended mild spell, starting February...
I am not sure if you have a fire bowl and access to wood, but I find boiling sap is working well over an open fire. I find the propane cost while using the turkey fryer prohibitive. The cost of the...
Boiled today. The cold front was coming in, with strong winds. It was -11° C (12.2 F) with the wind chill. I made 1.75 L of golden syrup.

Well today was a surprise. Temps today on some sites had it going just over freezing, some had it going to +2° C (35.5 F). Overnight it never reached -3° (26.6 F). I thought some sap might flow as it...
You may find that your spouts are plugged with bacteria. I missed taking out one tap and the spout was full of bacteria.
