Will you be able to remove it easily when you run out of sap? you can have an issue with the sap turning to sugar in the pipes if you run out and keep it in the heat.
I welded bolts to the arch and pushed the blanket down over it then used large washers and nuts to hold it in place. You can use a little refractory cement to make the bolt head and nut last longer.
About 100 feet over a 600 foot run.
Do a search, a bunch of us have done a preheater this way, I did one on my previous homemade arch. One thing that helped a lot was I took the next size up of pipe and made a jacket to cover the...
madmapler is correct, my 3/16 runs were all regularly achieving 15" to 20" of vacuum. I wasn't very methodical about checking for leaks, I just put a vacuum gauge at the top of the line and was...
Really hoping for one more good run here. Weather looks like we might get two. Passed last years production a couple days ago so it's all bonus territory now. Good luck everyone.
That's right, no problem where it goes into the holding tank just keep the upper section free of leaks. As far as the drop, 30' is ideal but I have a run that drops about 15 feet and I still get...
I don't think it's going to do much. I guess I don't understand why you don't wrap the stack. My old evaporator had the 6" stack wrapped and then a piece of 8" surrounding that. The sap got heated...
Good luck to you as well. We've only put in 1/4 of our taps in case this is just a bit of a tease for the real season. Mother Nature is one heck of a mystery.
Has it rained at all during this process? Usually when you get yellow sap it's really only some rain water getting into your bucket. I have a lot of taps run through 5 gallon bucket lids like you...
I didn't think about the braided hose, that will probably work perfect. I was looking on ebay and it seemed everything was 1-1/2". Thanks
I recently bought a Honda WX10 to use for collecting out of 55 gallon barrels and pumping up into a 275 tote in my truck. What type of hose do you all recommend using. I figure I'll need about 25'...
We'll hope for a freeze up to buy you some more time.
Spot weld 1/4 or 5/16 rod then use washers and nuts.
We all recognize the symptoms. Welcome to the madness. Do you have any idea how much you would like to grow, or how many trees you may have to tap? These questions will greatly steer the decision...
Certainly not an expert but I had a similar situation on a line of 3/16 last year it still produced much better than my 5/16 on the same slope.
I filter through a cone filter with 3 pre-filters into a coffee urn and bottle in mason jars right away. No water bath. I've never had an issue.
Here's a wishy washy answer. I think you'll be fine with 3/4 but if it's only an extra $20 or $30 you might as well go for the 1"
Totally different idea, I've gone to the local grocery store bakery the last two years and they've sold me their frosting buckets for $1 each. They're food grade and usually come in 2.5, 4 and 5...
My sugar palace is 14x16 and it's just right for my 125 tap operation. I have a home built 3.5x5 evaporator. I know it's a touch bigger than you want to go but the added with makes a big difference...
Another one is ceramicfiberonline. I've ordered from them twice. A 2x25 roll including shipping is just over $100.
Many of us have. I had pretty good results on my old oil tank arch. Check my gallery for pics, the sap was coming out of the preheater at about 120 to 140 degrees. The only issue I had was...
Jiggle siphons work great. Once you get it started down the hill it should have no problem. Nice and easy for your purpose. No electric or gas needed.
Don't do it. As soon as you guys down South start tapping I start getting an itchy trigger finger. Then every day when I log on I wonder how much sap I missed.
