We are small time and with a few family members we can tap in a day. Holding off for now. We set up the tanks and releaser today and waked the lines.
With our 27” of snow, you can really see how...
We pulled just over a gallon per tap in the last 24 hours. Even the buckets kicked in late today. Our south facing trees did well. Sugar was 1.6, which is becoming our norm ;(. Im going to pull...
We had good flow in short windows this weekend. 30 hours we were 1.3 g/t. Sugar was 1.8 with the help of 100 buckets. No complaining here. Stopped cold tonight at 5:00.
The last four days have been good to us. The overnights were in the upper 20s. Pretty steady average at 1.25 gallons per tap. Pulling 26” on the line of 1.5 to 1.6 SC.
The buckets bring it up to...
I would be curious how this works out. I plumbed my releaser so that I can a barrel to act as “capacitor” to smooth the transition. At this point Im small enough that recovery isn’t an issue.
Thank you both for the replies. I slid home early and walked my lines in daylight. I worked my valves to determine my leaks were in two areas. One area had a hanging drop line and a chewed drop...
Hello all:
I hope that you are all off to a good start. I have added an Airiblo vacuum system this year, replacing my old lab vacuum “system”.
I run 400 taps on 2 main lines of 1”. I have walked...
Sean:
I started using the screws last year. The manifolds held high the first year but I found myself squeezing the another click every subsequent year. On my 1” lines I also have 3 teeth to go. ...
We got the season back on track today. My son and a friend came over and we tapped our vacuum line trees. We got into a good rhythm of replacing spouts, drilling holes hammering taps. I had...
Hey USMC:
Glad to see that you are at it in VA. I assume that you don’t have many Sugar maples in VA. (?) Are maples hard to find? My wife wants to retire in Rocky mount/ Smith Mt lake area. ...
I took last year off to cut in a road. One year off means three times as many fixes. Rigged the mainline run this weekend to accommodate the road. Its only a hobby to me and my family but, we...
OK, so scratch my last post. The idea was to run the pumps all night and finally finishing a good book. Beer opened, butt in recliner, book in hand...................and the wind starts to howl...
I expected more here in Jonesville. The pumps started at 11:00 and I have about 100 gallons. I dumped the first 50 but it looks clearer now. Anytime I’m dumping the releaser in 10 minutes or less...
Very cool project. The bees seem like a natural step for any orchard. Keep posting in the off season. Always enjoy seeing what folks have for hobbies.
Pulled the buckets tonight and heard the peepers on the way down. Ill leave the line taps in for now just in case. Spud, tell us more about the apple trees. I planted 6 Dunstan Chestnuts last year...
In hopes of a big day tomorrow, I was collecting some test buckets high up in our woodlot. Then it dawned on me that this was the first time this year that I collected sap with snow on the ground! ...
Good flow both Saturday and Sunday. Nearly 900 gallons of sap combined. My vacuum has settled in at 23”, which is pretty decent for me. The sugar content is still tough. 1.4 Saturday, 1.3 today. ...
Sap ran well for me here on the western slope of Chittenden county. Kicked in around noon and is still going. SC did not improve with the last freeze. Starting to believe the old say “Weak sap...
Things kicked in for me around 2:00 this afternoon. Ran steady, not crazy, until 9:00 tonight. Sugar came up from a pre-freeze of 1.6 to a 1.8. Ive struggled with SC this year. Bucket volume...
First, I fully agree that you tap what you have. Im not so picky that I pass on any maple thats 16” thick and has a decent canopy. I use the term “red” or “soft" to describe most Maples that aren’t...
My buckets can run near 3.0 and my line taps avg 1.8-2.0. This year has been a different story. My line sugar has struggled between 1.5-1.8......ugh!
I hope the weekend cool down breaths new life...
Thank you for posting your 3/16 results. Your reports are mind boggling. We have a combination of buckets and 5/16 on vacuum. I have always felt that my best trees are in a draw that is at the...
Live and learn. Everyone messes up. I Tapped a tree on vacuum for the third time and realized my dead end T was in front of another T on a large tree. Don’t get much sap that way. Good Luck
I tapped two weekends ago and checked leaks in the rain Thursday. We turned pump the vacuum on this morning at 0600. We collected about a gallon per tap but, man was my sugar low!! Looks like we...
