A few days back I questioned you all about the “tap root myth” and you all confirmed my thoughts. So now I’m wondering, What are other Maple Syrup Myths? I can think of a few, but what have you all...
That sounds amazing, it seems that when % is high, flow is low, but then again sometimes it’s just a crapshoot.
I was suspicious of my big yard tree, almost 3.2%. Much better than the woods. What’s your best?

Long story short, I got contacted by a writer who found me through YouTube, and she wanted to talk to Ked about the making of Maple Syrup. Pretty vague article, but a pretty fun experience for them...
Might have to wait till after the season, I quite often have people stop by, as I’m outside and in the open, but I always feel rude, being too busy to entertain
Thanks all, I do a little YouTubing, and as I do my Syrup VLogs I like to only talk what I know. I do know that Maples do not have said tap root, and flow is not dependent on root or limb. I really...
Drilled 53 taps today, most ever on my little farm. Hoping to have a nice run this weekend.
So I keep hearing people (some Youtubers, some fairly reliable folks) talking about the best place to tap is above the “tap root”. Is there any actual proof to this? Or is this legend? I can’t say...
Hey all, it seems that every year I tap, boil, and produce a bit more. I am finally getting a demand from enough friends, family, and their friends that I need to figure out how to ship. I bottle...
So wondering if anyone knows? I’m out doing fall chores here in Michigan and wondering does the change in color of the leaves have anything to do with sugar content. Any scientific proof out there....
Hey All! This is an Amazing Group with a Ton invaluable information for the big and small producers. This 2019 season I currently have 41 taps on my property in SW Michigan using lots of homemade...
This has been a great thread, this is my method as of the 2018 season https://youtu.be/7FskrCyu_hY
Improvements I plan to initiate this season as a result of reading this thread. I hope to build a...
I am all set, Thanks so much for the offers, happy sugaring
Hey All,
So here is a long shot. I’m wondering if there might be anyone headed to Sugar Bush Supplies (in the next couple weeks) that might be willing to share a ride or pickup an order for me. ...
I will be using buckets or possibly some short tubing runs. I’m more concerned with the plumpness or appearance of swelling of the bud and how to judge when it actually swells. I’m guessing from...
Toying around with idea of starting to tap my Soft Maples in order to expand operation. My concern is with the Hards it is easy to keep an eye on the “buds”, however by time it is Syrup season Softs...
Thank you, this is helpful, we are very much still at the Backyarder stage, with 9 gallons the most I have ever made in a season. Just trying to figure out if I can produce baking sugar in the...
Hey all,
I made Granulated sugar using a quart of syrup, what is my best storage method? a little video attached

Let me know how I did
Thanks,...
I'm glad I stepped away from the edge and waited. Took the day off and boiled near 100 gallons on my 28 taps during the 2 day run. Sugar was pretty low, finishing near 2 gallons. It was still...
Well thanks for encouragement, the trees along the yard/road are definitely further along than those in the wood. I think I'm going to keep trying and hoping for a run these next couple. Thanks...
Well I thought it would be my BIG year. Updated the small setup by building a small RO system that would pull 100 GDP, increased from 19 taps to 28 (all on hard maples), and went with a cone filter...
My buckets have been on the trees this past week with small amounts of sap getting dumped, however, do I need to pull the buckets and wash them to make sure that the next run of sap does not spoil...
27 taps today south of Allegan. Hoping for a freeze tonight. Good flow even with the wind.
What is clearance between brick and warming pan? Any figures and results from boiling?
