Sounds exactly like you are dumping condensate right back into the pan.
Heus,
I have to say that I am pretty pleased with my homemade piggyback/steamaway unit. It needs a few tweaks during the off season, but it's pretty close. I managed to increase the evap rate of...
1800 gallons of sap so far, on 226 taps. 30 gallons of syrup filtered and packed, fingers crossed for another freeze.
Jason,
If you didn't get the job done yet, and can bring the hood over to my house, I will cut the holes for you with my plasma cutter.
John,
My son just called me at work and said grandpa and him just brought in 225 gallons tonight from our 215 taps. Looks like I as well will be digging out the extra sap storage tank tomorrow.
Bradley, Get tapping, times a wasting. Sap will be running today and looks like a good week coming up. We have been tapped for two weeks now.
Started tapping today after getting the sap tanks washed and the sugar house cleaned. Hoping to have everything tapped by tuesday evening.
Done! Pulled taps and washed buckets today. The buds on the reds are going to pop any day now. I think any cold that is coming, is too little, too late.
It was not a banner year for me.
180...
Yay! frost on the ground this morning. We just might get one more run.
Thanks, I have only bottled 12.5 gal so far, but there is still what's left in the pans. I'm going to fire up for my son's scout troop today, but I would be shocked if we bring in more than 40...
Keep your fingers crossed man. I don't like the looks of the buds on the reds. Come on freeze!!!!!!!
Sugarhouse coffee:
1 mug of coffee (made with fresh sap of course)
2 oz Black Velvet
Sweet from pan to taste
Best cup of coffee around!
Channel 8 was at Lake Farm Park's sugarhouse. I brought in about 150 yesterday off of 180 taps. Warm spell ahead, big sap coming!
I am tapping tomorrow, regardless. I have help coming, and can't wait any longer. It looks like a warmup coming next week, so may the big sap run!
This coming Sunday will be tapping day for us. I'm just hoping that the snow doesn't get much deeper before then. They are saying maybe another 5" tonight/ tomorrow.
I use the blue also, with Soule hookless. Duct tape works good for pinholes where they rub against the tree with ice in them.
Heus, that doesn't sound too bad. Unfortunately I was out of town this weekend and couldn't have tapped anyway. Maybe I can get a few in tomorrow afternoon. Give me a call when you start boiling.
...
Close... very close. Probably will wait until next Sunday, but we'll have to see what this week brings.
Leroy, where abouts in Rock Creek are you? I'm in Lenox, at Rts 307 and 11.
Another member on here, Heus is in the Andover area.

Looking good Andy! Was that mine in the pic?
I would think wire screen or expanded metal would be best. By the way, emailed you about this very subject today, before I saw this thread.
Instead of drilling holes in plastic pails, I melt them. The location that I wanted for the hole was on top of a rib on the pail. I heated a 3/4 copper coupling with a torch, ( held with pliers ) ,...
John,
Tapped a week ago today, 145 taps. Sap was running good for a couple days. Brought in 225 gals. It shut down this weekend, and I'm hoping tomorrow and wednesday's 40+ degree highs get...
Tapped 125 today, they were running so-so. High only hit about 42 today, it was supposed to get warmer. Weather man says warming overnight tonight, so hoping for full buckets tomorrow. Another 25...
