We will be ROing and boiling tonight through Sunday. We have 4 gallons of finished syrup done and should end with about 10-12 gallons. That is a good year for me as a backyard weekend guy.
I am just now getting into the swing of things. I am a backyard weekend guy and had a nice week night boil last night (rare for me). Anyway sap is running hard right now, gonna be tough to stay...
I am in no way ready yet but here in Kalamazoo the forecast is for highs in the low to mid 30s with lows in the 20s for the next 10 days. By that time February is half gone. I think I will put out...
It’s been a great day to boil outside Kalamazoo. It’s been a hard rolling boil all day in my backyard 2x4 oil tank operation.
Sugar maples really flowing too.

South of Kalamazoo here. It seems the trees finally thawed and broke free today. I'm a backyard syrup dude. We just got in from collecting 40 gal on 15 taps using 5 gallon buckets.

Looking at weather.com... March 8th is the tap date.
Haven't done syrup in 5 years. I put out 8 taps today south of Kazoo. It's flowing but I haven't tested the sugar content yet. I will tomorrow. It's flowing, I plan to do a cook later in the week.
I am probably going to tap trees on Sunday. Next week looks like perfect sap running weather here outside Kalamazoo.
Next week looks like the week.
I tap Sugar and Norway maples and people that taste my syrup really like it. I agree combining different types does create unique flavors.
I collected Wednesday and just checked a couple buckets tonight... Bone dry. :(
Just collected my 26 taps and dumped about 20 gallons into tank. All my trees are very large roadside sugar maples with a couple of Norways mixed in for flavor. ;) All sap mixed in the storage...
The forecast here, nights don't go below 35 until the second half of next week. It's gonna be a short short season...
My trees are being very stingy this year. They have yet to flow more than a couple inches per bucket. :(
Nine trees tapped and maybe 3-4 gal of sap today. Added 8 more taps today that showed 3% sugar, so hopefully everything gets going soon.
I tap a few Norway's here in Michigan. They flow really well for me and sugar is usually right at 3 and sometimes a bit higher. I tapped two yesterday but did not take a sugar reading yet.
I have been able to make a 10x10 Ez-Up awning very comfortable for boiling. It has worked better than I would have guessed.
If the weather forecast is anywhere near accurate, we won't even start tapping until mid March. What a brutal stretch of weather!
I too am not doing anything until March. The temps plummet again next week.
Another one from Vicksburg, MI
I was listening to Hannity yesterday in my office and he had a weather expert on to mainly discuss the Super Bowl weather impact. During the conversation he said more than once, the Midwest was in...
I have heard that can happen too... :D
Don't be offended if I steal your design. NICE!
I did use a hydrometer. Next year I will have a back up! Thanks.
