Lapierre makes a propane hobby sized evaporator, it seems most items require an orfice change to go from propane to natural gas. Sounds too easy, I must be missing something.
This will be our first year inside, shack will be completed enough to boil in this spring. Can't wait!!!
Not sure if I am looking at it correctly, it looks like the smoke will head out the back thru the blocks. Could base stack slide right over the blocks, which may help support the base stack?
Looks great, we are looking to repurpose a 12x16 shed and put a 2x4 evaporator and finally get inside. Now that you have had a couple of years what are your favorite design aspects and what would...
Dad got sick of driving almost every day spending 8-9 hours to boil off sap on our homemade evaporator with an 18" x22" pan and has offered to help finance (buy) a hobby evap. He was at my uncles...
Nice build, 10-11 gal/hr evap rate sounds great!!! I hope to graduate up to that size from an oil drum evap next spring.
We were in Sterling for a wedding this past weekend, nice area. We had our first boil yesterday, happy sappy!
Or another week or two. The silver lining is we are working on an addition to our house which will come to a screeching halt once the sap flows.
Waiting for another week or two before we tap for buckets.
There are two that come to mind that can be seen from the road in Moretown, located in central VT. One off South Hill Road and the other on The Common Road.
Been a great season for our backyard operation we are at 4-1/2 gallons looking to break our record of 6 gals two years ago, buckets may have gone up early after last years quick and early season. We...
Finally running here, we should be in the thick of it for a solid week. If it does not rain after real job boiling sap again today, if raining finishing the almost syrup that my father started and...
If you already filtered and have it in storage prior to bottling I would heat to 185 and bottle, much hotter than that gets the niter involved again. 180 kills the germs in the bottle and if you...
You virtually answered your own question stating you are building a quick one out of block, recommend a chimney to keep the smoke out of the syrup. The arch is the area where the fuel is burned and...
Started batching Thursday night, finished off our first gallon of syrup Sunday and should have the same today if we finish off. I think we are just getting started on our parts, the trees just...
So I used vinegar to clean our small stainless batch pan and it worked well. We pulled our taps and I put them in a 5 gal. bucket with vinegar to clean the taps and let them sit for a week. When I...
Yes 23, No 5 of course it has to be noon....somewhere.
It sounds like it is time, my neighbor although a much larger operation tapped yesterday. We put the battery on the charger and pulled out the buckets and sap storage tanks yesterday. Hopefully it...
We made some cocktails that were pretty tasty although there was not much for measuring it consisted of: vanilla vodka, syrup, seltzer and ice. It was maply smooth.
Last year we made just over 2 gallons we are just shy of 3 gallons this year with a few more taps, with enough stored sap to get another gallon. The syrup has been a little darker but we are very...
By the way, great job on the evaporator!
Maple Hunter,
While I am no expert my understanding is that when continually adding sap that the concentrate is boiled longer which will make it darker. We went from the continually add "hole in a...
Tapped some yesterday and today nothing running yet, weather forecast led me to believe today would be warmer, with Wed & Fri as potential runs.
Prior to getting a syrup hydrometer I would boil some water then add 7 degrees to the candy thermometer that we used.
