I'm trying to decide the same thing... next weekend looks promising, but it's 10 days away and a lot of warmer days in between now and then....and I don't think I've ever trusted a 10 day forecast...

I'm trying to decide the same thing... next weekend looks promising, but it's 10 days away and a lot of warmer days in between now and then....and I don't think I've ever trusted a 10 day forecast...
Hi all... hope everybody had or is having a good sugaring season. Ours ended a little early here in western NY, but since it was my first year with my new sugar shack and Mason 2x3 evaporator, I...
I just have 3' drop lines to buckets.... had taps in for 40 days this year, and got just under 13 gallons of sap per tap. Last year I got 20 gallons per tap and only had taps in for 33 days.
...
16 of my 25 taps are Norways... Great flavor...and really good sugar content, over 2%. Mine are mostly yard trees. In year's past they produced on par with my Sugars and Reds... this year, they...
I don't have a current pic...but from the pic I show here, I added another row of splits to the dividing wall, bringing it to under 2" to the pan... then I filled in behind the wall to within a...
Yep, preheating sap... My challenge is that if the blower is anything higher than a super low setting or if the firebox is loaded dup more than half full, anytime I stray from that the boil does...
Well...after a bunch of trial and error, including adding brick behind the firewall, using the blower and keeping stack temp in check, my boil rate has been pretty much stuck in the mid 6 GPH range. ...
Well, I'm not sure my 65 gallon tank counts as big-***, but it's definitely not to your level of accuracy :). I have 25 taps this year...in 24 trees. Lots of fun to watch the numbers.
I don't track by tree...but I collect in a 65 gallon tank that has measurement markings on it...so I know what I collect per day. Some days I test my sap for sugar percent, but not all.
Being an...
I used this self adhesive gasket material on the ash door to prevent the sparks from flying out...especially when using the blower...
...
I've boiled a couple more times... I did add another row of fire bricks to the wall behind the firebox, that brings the wall within about 1 1/2" from the bottom of the pan. I'm also playing with the...
Thanks... Blocking the stack opening partly is interesting. That doesn't affect the draft at all?
This is how I bricked mine... The wall is less than 3" from the pan and I raised up the floor behind the wall.

What did you do to change the bricks in the fire box?
Hi.. been searching the forum on stack temp and stacks glowing red, and not 100% sure what I should change, if anything.
Did my second boil today. I'm getting right around 7.5 GPH rate. Today...
Thanks... I definitely got carried away a bit with the building process and aesthetics... but it's been fun, and very excited to start boiling in a week or two!

I got them at LampsPlus (https://www.lampsplus.com/products/urban-barn-10-and-one-quarter-inchw-galvanized-steel-outdoor-ceiling-light__4j462.html) ... but they don't look to be on sale right now. ...
These are a little hard to see since they are lit up in the pictures, but I wanted an old timey look and went with a barn style ceiling light. I have 8 of them with LED Bulbs in my 16'x24' shack,...
Yeah, mine appears to leave about a quart in the pan. Figured I'd ladle it or tip the pan.
It doesn't technically 'seal' because I didn't get the cutout perfect and the top pan kind of sits down inside the cutout....but it doesn't allow too much steam to escape. If I were to do it again,...
I've been looking for a better setup for filtering and bottling my syrup... being a hobby operation, I can't justify the cost of some of the commercial units, and don't produce enough syrup to even...
That's exactly how I wired mine too. The switch is technically redundant as the speed controller has an 'off' position, but I just liked being able to kill the power to the whole thing with the...
If I wanted to make the pan reversible, how reliable are the stainless weldless bulkhead fittings?
I was wondering about that, but my pan only has 1 draw off, so I'm not sure I can even reverse the flow if I wanted to, unless I'm missing something. I think I'd have to add a draw off to the other...
...and I apologize for the orientation of some of the pics, didn't realize they would all go landscape mode.
Here's a link to my Google Photos Album if you want to see better pics.
