The holes are definitely still open. I was leaning on it not being cold enough at night.

First week of Feb here in southwest Neb We had temps 50 to 60 during the day and upper 20’s at night. Great flow. Couple days ago same. But the last two days the daytime temps were mid to upper 60’s...
I gave up on the filtering simply because I lost too much syrup in the process. Simply because I make small batches. On the final cook I run it through a pre filter and straight into quart canning...
I have some top quality 12 oz bottles that take a very firm synthetic T type cork that fits very tight. Can I bottle my syrup in these? You know, heat up and bottle hot like you would with a normal...
Yeh, it's a pain to boil that long for no more than you get. My cooker boils down 10 gal an hour. Usually invite some buddies over, shoot the bull and have a few drinks to help pass the monotony.

I started out at 3% sugar Feb 13th, 2% Feb 23rd and 1-1/2% last week. When do you stop?
Jim
I dumped all of my previous syrup in a large kettle and added boiling water to the boil and retested the batch to 59 brix and actually got another quart of syrup when finished. Thanks fellas.
Jim
Oh yeh...... Just confirms it was cooked too far. Remedy to be done tonite.
Jim
Andy, so what you're saying I probably need to reheat and thin down a bit and bottle at 59 brix at 211 degrees? I'll take a reading of the syrup as it sits in my jars as I unseal them, kinda curious...
I was under the impression you cooked the syrup down to the bottom line where it read 67 brix while hot. I'm reading online that is the cold reading. ? What gives? I've been cooking down to 67 brix...
Here in southwestern Nebraska we have been in a severe drought for years. We went 2 months in the middle of summer with 1/4" of rain. I can tap trees on the creek bottom and get good sap, go up hill...
That's the way I'm going next year. I've been tapping since Feb 8th and still getting 2% sugar on my Box Elders. Checking tonite. 150 buckets and getting 25-30 gallons of sap every 3 days. We have...
Hey all, I'm only running half a gallon of syrup a shot and know the smaller the lot, the harder it is to gravity feed through the cone filters. Living in the Great American Desert here in Nebraska...
Brand new, wetted down and using 3 pre filters. Hot syrup straight from the stove. Get a little clean syrup and then it slows way down to the point that it cools enough not to filter through. What's...
Thanks fellas. This is the worst I've seen. Got 3 pint jars of filtered and they were filled over 1/2 hour at a time. Have to be re sealed. The rest I just dumped sugar sand and all in jars and will...
Surely someone here has an idea.............
Jim
Cooking in a large pan over a fire and finishing off on the stove I am getting almost 1/3 sugar sand. How can I ileviate this? Clogging up my filters to no end. Box Elder trees.
Jim
Thanks! That's what I was hoping I could do.
Jim
My filters are brand new and wetted down and in a heated box but still just drips. Takes forever to fill pint jars. My question is... With the syrup being rather warm than hot and the jars aren't...
Thanks fellas!

SW Nebraska here but you guys are the closest tappers to me. Started tapping my box elders 7 Feb and got 11 gallons, and a week later 50 gallons. Sugar percentage was 3. But add the ice after melting...
If sugar maples are supposed to go roughly 40-1, what's the sugar percentage average? I'm getting between 2 and 3 percent on my box elders and they're supposedly 80-1 or worse. Something doesn't make...
Hopefully this downloads.

Not sure what's wrong but "upload of file failed" keeps popping up when I try to post pictures.....

Upgraded from a simple cinder block unit. Took a 500 gallon propane tank, cut off one end and installed a sliding door. Started with a 6" chimney and found that the huge fire inside couldn't vent up...
