I re-tapped 6 trees, the sap is running clear and collected 18 gallons since 10am this morning.
Have to wait until morning to check the 10 other trees and hope they don't overfill the 5 gallon...
I actually went and tapped the trees I pulled last week because they were flowing so good this morning.
Using tube and 5 gallon buckets and the 4 of the 6 trees produced 2 1/2 - 3 gallons since...
I pulled most of my taps but still have 10 out there on my best trees with nicely closed buds.
Hoping for a nice little run this weekend with the temps dropping to 26deg - 28deg lows to get another...
I collected sap on Monday that was clear and buried in a snowbank and still clear, some of the stuff collected yesterday was cloudy and boiled that first but if you can get it buried in snow will...
This is only my second year tapping and went from 8 tress to 16 this year.
My question is if the season ends now will this drive the syrup prices up? I am not tapping to sell mine but was wondering....
Sweating out there during collection at 7pm lol
Been a long 3 days with working, collecting and boiling.
Monday collected 71 gallons, Tue 48 gallons and yesterday 32 gallons for a total of 151...

This is my setup and process right, wrong or overboard.
I should give credit to others on their ideas but don't remember who they were now.
I use cone filters in a 5 gallon bucket with the...
I tapped a few trees back in January when we had the warm up and made 3/4 gallon, then Feb 20th had all 16 trees tapped with 35 taps and pulled 220 gallons and made 4 1/2 gallons of darker syrup but...
Can you post a link to the discussion of using the refractometer at room temp please.
From what I understood is that the refractometers have (ACT) Automatic Temperature Compensation.
Glad to here you were able to do your first run.
How do you feel the GPH vs propane cost wise? I thought you estimated 2.5 GPH originally, I might be wrong.
I still want to build one and was...
I don't think that is the case for mine. I am using 5 gal buckets with holes that are drilled tight around the tubing, then I have a toothpick size breather hole and we have not had any rain or snow....
I have one tree doing the same and have left it aside.
Read other post just mix it in but will wait to see what others say.
I did check the sugar content and it is actually 1% higher than my...
When your second batch gets close, just add the first batch and make sure you get that red line floating above the syrup.
I will be doing just that as my first batch had sugar sand in the bottom.
Look on the bright side, your are not hurt and can continue on.
I thought I was going to read you broke your leg or something.
Your sled can be fixed quickly but you take time to mend.
Glad your...
You have inspired me! Are we getting close to a real world test with sap
I am looking at this Titanium one and have a 19x11x6 pan.
Plans would be to build an insulated box for it.
Have...
This was such a great read and didn't notice it stopped on page 10
I was wondering Fyreaway did you make any improvements for this year?
Only my second year and with only 10-15 trees I will have mine all in tonight for this weekend run :D
Was reading not to ring them out and someone suggested to use a rolling pin.
I twisted mine to ring it out before I knew and believe it doesn't work as good now.
Now I will be letting them hang and...
I have about an 1/2 inch of sugar sand in bottom of bottles so they will get re-filtered in the new filter, now that I know how to care for it properly.
Just like any hobby sometimes you learn as...
I actually rinsed the bottles out in 175 deg hot water, but did not know about warming them in the oven to 200 deg.
Small batches for us so not a big deal to throw 6-8 bottles in there to warm up.
The more I am reading, it looks like that was the case.
I did tighten them sung but not over tightened.
It was a long day so right after the last pan was washed I went to bed.
There was a very very thin coat cooked completely to the bottom but is scrubbed right off. I am guessing that was some of the sugar sand cooked to the bottom of the pan
Since this was my second time making syrup it is a good chance I did something wrong, but I have been reading/refreshing everything on the site I had time for.
I am not saying it is the caps but...
She did ask me and I didn't know there was a difference and will get some different ones.
Yes the pan was on our stove top with two separate burners and makes sense. I have read about the...
