I hope surgery goes smoothly for you Eustis.
I finally got everything tapped yesterday afternoon. I'm feeling like I may have started a bit late, but too much other stuff on my plate to get it...
Well its all done for the year. Everything is cleaned up and put away until next season.
My final tally was 7 gallons off of ~40 taps and a moderate level of effort. I'm happy with it and now...
I collected about 30 gallons yesterday and did a nice after work boil. It was probably my last one, but, I've got some wood left so if it runs today I may boil one more last time.
I'm also not...
That's for sure. I sat out Sunday evening for half an hour inthe freezing wind waiting for it to feel safe enough to head for the house.

It was a long 2 days outside. This morning I felt like I had had the crap kicked out of me. I really need to finish the sugar shack I started 2 years ago and then build the RO that I have had in...
Eustis, you've been way busier than me. I finally got to boil this weekend and it took me all of both days to get through about 200+ gallon of raw sap. (no RO for me yet).
I did find a much...
I go tapped a little late and still have not started to biol yet (everything is ice at the moment). I hope this week's temps don't bring things to a sudden stop. If I get one more good day of sap...
I used to post in the Rowley thread I started a few years ago, but, figured that Essex County would be a good for more folks to post in.
After skipping last year I am anxious to get back at it...
I pushed tapping back until last Sunday due to cold temps the week before. It looks like maybe I should have waited another week.

Glad to hear things are starting to flow. I'll be tapping the next few nights, should be able to hang about 50 before Thursday.
Then I just need to get everything together to boil.

I learned to weld by building my arch a few years ago. Welding is an invaluable skill, even if you can just handle the basics (like me).
As stated above, you can probably pick up a cheap welder...
Had a few small runs this weekend and boiled about another 80 or so gallons. I will probably pull that out of the pan and finish it one night this week. It will probably slow for a few days after...
Its been chilly, but, I'm not sure its been cold enough. Hopefully we get one more run. I'll be lucky to get 2 gallons if we don't.

That new set up looks great. I finally got to tap last weekend. Pulled about 50 gallons off the trees on Tuesday night, then only had about 10-15 last night. There is no cold in the forecast for a...
I have AUF and have never cleaned ash out of my arch. I burn pallets, so I have cleaned lots of nails.

I have gotten to the point where I am making more syrup than we use as a family and give away as gifts. While the logical thing to do is make a little less, I'm thinking of trying to grow the...
I feed mine with a side inlet. I also use a couple of bricks below the gracet to get the air to push forward before moving up. I feel like this gets air to the front of the fire instead of just...
I'll see what i can get my hands on for literature and specs and post them here.

I have been thinking about adding RO and looked at both commercial units (expensive for hobby/ small operator) and home built units. Because of the work I do i also have access to marine water...
Taps are pulled on 2016 and I am trying to get a jump on improvements for 2017. At the top of my list are build a shack (already in process) and fabricate a new arch. I have seen numerous papers on...
I've got about 230 gallons in my tanks so I am at capacity. Now I just need to keep it cold until the weekend. I tossed a bunch of buckets in the chest freezer last night and made less ice than I...
Take a cup of it and flash it off in a pan on the stove to see what you get. 10 days seems like a while, but, if it is cold you might be okay. I have boiled sap with some cloudyness in the past...
Humping sap tonight is going to be a serious work out.

I boiled off between 80 and 100 yesterday and also tossed the almost syrup I had from last weekend back in to get everything down to about 8 gallons that is off by 3-4 brix. Hopefully I can fire up...
Not much flow this week. I have about 80 gallons to boil at the moment. Will probably wait until Sunday as tomorrow has promise for some good flow.
