I carry a shoulder strapped tool bag. Drill and hammer go in the bag. Along with repair fittings for my tubing. Drop setups get looped around the shoulder strap.
Dropped the drill off the belt...
This last unexpected collection brings me up to about 1000 gallons of sap for the year on 60 taps.
I've got a timing chain job on one of my cars that rapidly clawing it's way to the top of my...
I was ready to call an end to things this week as well. Of course mother nature decided to change my mind for at least today. Wasn't expecting to come home today to a full barrel of 2.5% sap one of...
Another 40 gallons today. Not bad for the weather. I'm reading 2-3 brix in my sap which is pretty good for my trees. Evap is up and running gotta make room in storage for what is going to run...
Noticed the lines were running last night as the sun went down. Wasn't much in my barrels as I emptied them out last week before the cold snap. Looked at one of my barrels this morning and there's 40...
Same this season has be off to a great start I'm at 600 gallons of sap so far. It's as strong of a start to the year as I've had. Maybe not as steady of a sap flow but the on and off strong runs have...
Yep using the same thing to finish this year. Works way better than I expected although that might be thanks to the 200k btu high pressure propane burner under it.
This current storm is a mess. Had a solid 3 inches of little ball bearings of sleet covering my back deck this morning. Gonna have to rush to get everything cleaned up with all the cold air coming in...
What a warm wet and windy night for February. Tough night to be boiling but I want to get the sap I have from yesterday and today cooking before the mid 60s weather tomorrow.
I will be pulling my taps by mid March and start getting my veggie gardens ready to go. Gotta build some raised beds this year.
I'm currently wondering the answer to that same exact question. I picked up some flat filters and have it setup on an old 6" steam pan. Also got some DE to add to see if it helps or not.
Have a...
Take my last week for example.
Monday, Tuesday, highs in the 20s lows in the single digits. No sap
Wednesday highs mid 30s lows in the 20s. No sap
Thursday morning starts above freezing and...
Was expecting a bit more sap yesterday but just as it warmed up and the lines started moving the snow began to fly and temps plummeted.
Finishing up my my concentrate this morning to try out my...
Another 120 gallons or so of sap in two days. When I collected this afternoon the lines were slowing down to stopped. Air temp is dropping like a rock gonna be a chilly night to be outside boiling.
You can achieve a decent amount of vacuum with a sureflo pump or the cheap knockoff versions available on Amazon. You just need some valves and a gauge to setup a recirculation line for the pump.
Did a quick check this morning before heading to work and all my lines are full of sap and running great. Was a little worried I didn't get all the animal bites in the tubing last night before it got...
If it's truly only minimal elevation rise from tank to building yea you can do it. You will have to set the pump up like you would if you were using it to generate vacuum on a tubing run.
Once...
Wait until tomorrow it was very cold for the past couple of days. It didn't get warm enough for long enough yet to get things moving again.
Have faith and pray the squirrels and deer leave your...
Found out today that my new propane finisher works great. Finally picked up a hydrometer and cup so no more guessing about how accurate my digital thermometer is.
Remembered just how much I hate...
Thermometer in the front yard is reading 65F and it's not even noon. All the trees have slowed down or just plain old stopped running this morning.
It's a beautiful day to be outside boiling....
All my lines are 3/16 gravity vacuum. With between 110 feet to 75 feet of elevation top to bottom. So yea I'm on vacuum.
Like he said I am very much NOT your typical CT syrup maker season wise....
Collected about 70 gallons today. Everything is still running and doesn't show signs of slowing. Not sure it will continue to run until the next freeze on Sunday but if it does I'm going to be...
That's a rough way to start the season. I wish you a speedy recovery, and many extra hands to help.
Another 50 gallons today and fire under the pan. Gonna be a busy week.
