Still frozen today in the NEK. Most sap runs start early afternoon and finish early evening.
Been a very slow and cold spring. Looks like warmer temps starting tomorrow.

I’ve been using the videos from Cornell and UVM Maple Research Center to assist in my thinning activities.

Last day boiling, still running on upper section but want to avoid buddy sap. Of course today its snowing on the mountain.
The cold and snowy days are making tapping difficult.21907
Started tapping today, thankfully only 14-16 inches of snow in the woods.
I wouldn't recommend my set up to anyone, sugarhouse and evaporator are way too small. I'm on the side of a mountain with no ability to expand the sugarhouse until I get down to the valley.
I use a 8x8 Argo Frontier 650 to get around the mountain, some of the trails are too dangerous for a four wheeler. I also use the Argo to haul firewood out from blowdowns and when I'm thinning. 21817
here's the video showing the three inch line and wire used.

My sugarhouse is at 1680’ and is at the base of the sugarbush which ends at 2,400ft elevation. Not unusual to see wild swings in temperatures from the valley to the sugarhouse to the top of the...

Received a few private messages on how we did. Well, as of yesterday, still boiling. I had to take an assignment to Miami, FL so the family is handling the operation. NEK received several inches of...
Currently running two Indiana pumps and get 27" when system is tight. Don't have power to sugarhouse so no option. Would gladly switch to the grid. Cost for gasoline averages $2,500 - 3,000 a season.
it's being addressed on this side of the border:

As we usually say, it depends on your situation. Would not make sense from a start up operation angle but for a local existing operation that could handle the capacity (which is a totally different...
Eric Miller is now running the accounts. I heard Tom went back to logging and working his sugarbush.
20 cords of firewood moved under storage for next spring. Need to split and stack another 25 to 30 cords. Next project cleaning out original 3200 tap sugarbush.
Was that meeting in Colorado? :)
There are numerous buyers in Vermont who pay better prices. I don't want to advocate one or the other.
Bascom usually pays the lowest. I for one can't afford to sell to him.
Excellent. If we can get the pharmaceutical companies to make it addictive to the user, well be golden.
Dr. Perkins, great feedback on the topic. You addressed all three primary issues. I was looking at business model five years out and budgeted a price of $2.00/lb.
Question I'm asking myself "what...
Turn off the lights, the party is over.
All done with a final boil today, sap is getting ropey.
We should be around 4,780 gallons. Was hoping for a better year but all vonsidering, we did...
Boiled yesterday and made about 170 gallons. Syrup is getting darker, still has a good maple taste. Temps were down to 30 last night. Next two days should tell us how long we go into next week.
