We tapped about 325 on gravity Friday and it did not start running until mid Saturday afternoon after the sun finally made it's way out of the clouds. Ran a little better Sunday and decent Monday,...
Just my two cents, I would tell them to consider tapping this weekend depending on their schedule.
After I finished installing drop lines this evening I went ahead and tapped one test tree and hung a bag just to get another indicator for tapping. Got a few drops, but sun was already down. Temps...
For those that have already tapped are your trees flowing yet?
Are you using a nitrogen blanket for sap storage?
I had considered a nitrogen blanket for sap storage in the future, has there been any research done on this? I know this is quite common in wine production.
Nice job on these, looking forward to trying these out.
Grading is a layover from the old days when maple sugar was the primary sweetener used in the Americas. It was used as a sweetener in most everything and thus maple flavor was not always desirable...
Anyone else already tapped or tapping this weekend?
Pyro, unless you freeze your sap you will not want to store it that long. If you do it will spoil from bacteria or at a minimum bacteria will reduce your sugar content.
200 Bags
2x6 AUF
Trees were dripping pretty good as I was tapping 5-6 this evening. I am 20 miles SW of Canton.

If noise is your issue consider AUF versus AOF that way you can use a 'low pressure' squirrel cage type blower. They still make noise, but not nearly as much as high pressure blower.
I am hoping you are right, just hope I have just enough time to get done the little odds and ends before it hits.
Nice job, much nicer looking than what I boil in!
Nice work and the price is right! Having them low to the ground will make dumping easier.
sawyerkirk,
If you need help with the calculations let me know I can figure those out for speed and force (tonnage). You also need to understand how you are going to mount the pump, both mounting...
200 Sap Sacks for me this year and hoping to go to tubing with a "Sap Puller" for next year and add a couple hundred taps. For now I collect with a 275 gallon IBC tote on the back of my 35HP...
I am with Maple Addict here, these tanks are made from HDPE and in industry this plastic is often ground then melted again to mold new products, thus you certainly can do as he described. If you...
Good for people to hear this, please make sure that if you have a domain registered that you retain the rights to that registration, i.e. preferably you or your organization pay for the registration...
Here this might help: http://www.ohiomaple.org/sap-app.html I believe it was based on UVM calculations.
I am south of you, SW of Canton, and thinking similar. Probably tap toward the end of next week if forecast stays same or warmer.
A pressure transducer and properly configured VFD will help you save money as the transducer can tell the VFD when you are at the vacuum pressure you want and will slow the motor down saving you...
Looking forward to hearing reports after things start to thaw out.
Usually when using AUF you have an 'arched' grate with round holes versus the slots in many grates designed for natural draft arches. See pages 26 and 27 of current Leader catalog for a good...
