We put in aprox 60 taps 2 weeks ago, got about 350 Gallons of sap, and just finishing it now, hoping for 6 or 7 gallons of light syrup when we're done, and we'll put in another 100 taps in around...
Hi Socraticd, It's unclear, the tapped hole might dry out, but then the tree itself should continue as the other trees around it, you might even move the tap to a new hole on the same tree if it's...
With a stretch of warmer days coming next week, we put 20 taps in this afternoon and the sap was gushing out. Might put another 20 taps in tomorrow, and we'll wait and see... Cheers, DavidSB
Hi, I had to put aside a half baked batch of syrup for 3 weeks in 5Gal plastic pals in a cool garage, to be finished later on propane. Just getting back to it, it seems to have gone "gloppy", I...
>>>Hoping to make a gallon of birch syrup, but will settle on some kind of birch beer.
Hi Worcester, that would be great making some birch, last year i brought it halfway on the evaporator, then...
I put 6 test taps in our black birch today, and it started flowing. I've still got maple going thru our 2 x 6, we'll have to light our old half pint for the birch sap. I made some last year, the...
Yesterday we had a great flow, 150 taps, we took close to 300 gallons of sap out of the woods, and I suspect we'll find the barrels half full again this morning. Cheers, DavidSB
100 taps in, maybe another 100 today. It's a tough slog in the deep snow, with repairs as we go. Weather dot com indicates a week of possible flow coming, 3 weeks late. Cheers, DavidSB
Has it rained or melting snow been dripping down the bark? I've had buckets of sap turn amber because of rain picking up color from the bark, and enough entering covered metal buckets to make me...
Hi, toward the end of the season, I keep a close nose to the pan, I can smell the slight buddy-ness in the steam, but only after it's been reducing for a little while, not to long, but can't smell it...
little flow between yesterday and today, but got that buddy odder coming off the pan today, that's it, we're done for the season. Thinking about trying the fall tapping. Might be interesting. ...

great flow today in Ashby, despite the wind, went to 26F last night, warm and sunny today, no buddy smell off the evaporator yet. It's all from the sugar maples, nothing from the reds. Also, the...
You should get about 6 weeks out of a tap, although some of those windy days might accelerate drying out the tap hole. -David in Ashby
>>> My buckets from the first warm up aren't running that...
We got all tapped out mid february, had that nice weekend flow a few weeks ago, and then nothing till yesterday and today we had a little flow, but still not much. aprox 200 sugarmaple taps, aprox...
Both look like Red Maple, the fine toothed edge is the give away. If you have domestic animals, the red maple in the fall can be poisonous to the animals, like horses, sheep, goats... something...
Hi, I was wondering what the birch folks think about the following approach to a birch evaporator. I was thinking after we've boiled down most of the way, we could introduce essentially a double...
Hi, I'm David, been on MapleTrader before, it's been a while and I forgot my password. My family and I are in an old colonial on 70 acres, there are old sugar maples around the house, and no where...
