Several years ago I listened to a presentation that made the point that scratch cooking was such a small percentage of the population that market researchers couldn't even measure it.
Sad actually!...
Where are people taking their measurements at, I've always used DBH, diameter at breast height, when measuring any tree?
I have a little over 200 trees greater than 10 inches DBH, and another 80...
I boiled down 98 gallons of birch, just finished it. Ended up with 5 pints plus a little more to taste in a day or two, after the Easter candy clears my tastebuds...... Lol
It boiled nice, I ran my...
I tapped two more birch today, they are just starting. My maples gave me a good spurt of sap today, as well.

I kept track of sap that I put in, looks like 55g is just below the threads/top of taper. That is if my collection tank markings are...
I'm using two of those 210,000 burners for my main pan, love them!

My test birch started running, a little, yesterday. Is there a minimum tree size to tap? Any other guidance?
I'm currently not sure if I can boil full bore for most of the boil, or simmer the whole...
I tapped one birch on the 26th, watching it, will tap another 15 to 20 this year.

This year I have ants on 4 of my maple taps, they get filtered out pouring into my collection tank.

This year I'm filling milk jugs and storing almost syrup in my fridge. Makes sense to me to filter and bottle a set amount each time. Except for the last bottling lol

Looking to tinker with, build a RO for next year. Had a good run on the new set up, yesterday, hitting 14gph boil off rate. Looks like the preheater is helping.

I cook over propane, I put two burners, 200,000btus each, under a 25x48 inch pan, on concrete blocks. All hooked to a 250G propane tank. This is my first year running it on the 250G tank. 2016 I ran...
I picked up a few of these barrels, what level in the barrel is 55 gallons, completely full, or some other level?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200319/a040fa9eed0829f8c6457c399e101dd4.jpg

I too am looking for a small pump, been leaning towards Surflow. I have a 35 gallon leg tank for collecting sap, then pump to storage at the shack. Maybe 200 taps tops.

Evening, I have access to cheap, and clean IBC Totes. I can get 275, or 330 gallon tanks.
Was thinking about elevating them so the valve is 5 to 6 feet off the ground. I'm concerned with building...
Thank you for the great replies, and I now have much more to think about!

That makes sense, thank you for your insight. I have sap and syrup hydrometers, never even thought about a sap refractometer.

In addition to making syrup, I also keep bees. I occasionaly brew up some beer, wine, or mead; just to keep things interesting. To that end, trying to find a refractometer that will work for all...
There is no elevation reading on the mobile version, that I can find
This is the door that I built for my block arch, that I have not used yet. I have since painted it though! :)

If you want to set them on top, I would still find a way to put thinner blocks around the outside edges of the pans to retain heat, and block the wind. Then you just remove a block or two in order to...
Thank you, looks like I may end up with two copies! LOL
I will do that, and thank you!!
