how did it work for you and the sweet gum?
To anyone interested go to www.sugarbugva.com for gravity spile and line.
I'm thinking about getting 3/16 system next year to help lower bacteria and draw sap on marginal days.
has been cooler than last year, just not cold enough. last year at this time I had at least one great run. This year barely over 5 gallon in 100 trees.
go, go, go for it.
last week we got 15 gallon. slow start.
14951 this years trees
how do the temperature do in Tennessee.
did you find one???
this weekend is looking really good
Tapped my trees December 26, almost got sap on the 31st of December just mist it by a few degrees.:D
I'm doing it with stainless steel pipe bung welded to the pan. Hooking up some ball valve and gate valve to be able to dump drain the pan, copper pipe connect the pan together with a pipe disconnect...
if it does it would be thru root pesure so tap late. After speaking to a few biologist, it has too much resin to be able to respond to stem pressure like a birch.
if i do it won't be at the scale i did. The challenge I've got is the gum out numbers the maple 50 to 1.
so i got no sap what so ever from sweet gum. Kinda really bumb about it, really hoping it was going to work because we have such an abundance of them.
if it does it would be on the amount of sap i get. forestry agent told me i should have about 60 days on holes for taps at this time of year, after that we loose 50% of the hole.
it does not respond to stem pressure like maple, walnut and sycamore but more like birch if it does produce. the story or article was written by a fictitious character who does not exist, other than...
it looks like if it will flow it will be thru root pressure, so like a birch. I have 85 sweet gum and got nothing from them yet. Next 2 weeks could be promising it should happen between when it buds...
the thing i like the most about your rig is it looks like no heat lost. love it
maple trees have been done here, real bad year for making syrup but a quart of syrup still better than nothing.
I only have 4 trees and I got 3 gallon so far this season
though year for Virginia with the whole elninio thing going on
got 2 1/2 gallon of sap out of 4 maple trees, measured at 1.5%. pretty stoked about it
Nice stove budy
!/4 cup of sap in 3 bucket so far
